All down the line, and we'll keep the motor running, yeah
All down the line, you can't say yes and you can't say no
Just be right there when the whistle blows
I need a sanctified girl with a sanctified mind to help me now

Yeah, all the people singing, all down the line
Watch the men all working, working, yeah, all down the line
All down the line, and we'll open up the throttle, yeah
All down the line, and we'll bust another bottle, yeah
All down the line, I need a shot of salvation, baby, once in a while

I like the version on Handsome Girls in which the piano is in the front, it adds a nice barreling along touch to the song. Ronnie also does a nice job on the slidework of the song. I can say that I like the way Mick sings the song on Exile but live he sort of yells and seems to force the vocals. It fits perfect on Exile before Stop Breaking Down.

If you saw the Stones on their 1970 tour of Europe then you heard "Down the Line" live. It was great then and has certainly stood the test of time.

Hammertrack, was so happy when they did it again in 07.

It´s always kicking (with one exception: the version on the LSTNT/Rocks Off
movie is incredible bad, wished When the Whip ... remained instead)

I know "Loving Cup" was done at Hyde Park 69,"Brown Sugar" at Altamont 69 and some of the other SF songs were done before release on the European 70 tour. And actually some "Let It Bleed" numbers were played live on the US tour before albums release but I've never heard of "All Down The Line" played before the 72 tour. Can you enlighten us?
By the way the 45 MONO mix and the Album mix is nearly like listening to two different songs to me! I cant decide which one I like the best.

I love "All Down the Line" even though I don't understand what, exactly, it's about (as is the case with a lot of the Stones' songs). Is there a sanctified mind who can help me out right now?
Perhaps with sssoul would care to expand on his/her post.

for me it's all about going to club, dancing fighting and having fun there and then running away on full speed, and

> All down the line, you can't say yes and you can't say no

they're gonna rip some joints there, too winking smiley

((Mama says yes, Papa says no,
Make up you mind 'cause I gotta go.
I'm gonna raise hell at the Union Hall,
Drive myself right over the wall.))

i'm a she-sssoul, Harlem Shuffler ... and i'm not sure i can express how i hear it
any clearer than i did in my previous post, especially because i'm busy with something else right now.
i'll ponder it though ... i don't just mean the words, i mean the whole of it.
it's a declaration of faith in the music - in going where the music leads them, all down the line.

Sometimes I think Mick strings some lines together cause it just works well!

René

How about the guitar tabs so some of us can cheat and learn it the easy way? I agree, it's a hard driving and excellent tune.

>> Sometimes I think Mick strings some lines together cause it just works well! <<

yeah, these are not the most elaborately-worked-out lyrics around, are they ...
but what great and evocative images, and how fine it all sounds!
the train imagery in the music as well as the words - it's a variety of road song, isn't it;
and at the same time it's got a gospel flavour: trains come up a lot in gospel music.

scottkeef, do you have some basis for saying the lyrics are Mick's? they sound like a collaboration to me.
i don't think i've ever read any details about the writing of this number, but i'd love to, if the Glimmers have ever discussed it.

Nah, with ssoul I just kinda assumed cause it sounded like Mick to me. I'm afraid it may have sounded like I didnt think Mick put alot of thought into the lyrics! On the contrary, Mick and/or Keith seems to come up with lines that you just dont expect. So many great ones that actually have provided the titles of alot of bootlegs! Tumbling Dice is another one that blows me away with loads of lines that all sound like they could be the "hook". I guess what I tried to convey is sometimes it's like the lyrics flow so smoothly that it seems effortless.

Well Mick does care what he sings live, because he shortend this line:
"I need a sanctified girl with a sanctified mind to help me now"

probably to prevent his tongue get tangled in a knot, hehe.

I seem to remember Mick saying about Exile; he wanted people to dance, not think when listening...it definetely works for me when it comes to this track.

So many wild live versions too...guess my fave is Mobile '72 incl Mick getting electric shocks from the mic...'gonna rock on!'

this is one of my top favorites, and my favorite version is brussels. the energy keeps building on that one and by the end its Just CRAZY!!!!! the horns during the "Be my little baby for a while" part are perfect. theres one short note followed by a long note that fades out. To me this is the definative ADTL.

<<Bill Plummer - upright acoustic bass>>

Bill Wyman claims he played bass on this track

<<Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, June 16 - July 23, 1970>>

I think it's listed at the Los Angeles Oct '69 sessions prior to these Olympic Sound Sessions.

True, ADTL is like many songs on Exile that don't necessarily have literal meanings but are nonetheless lyrically outstanding.

Not that I want to divert this thread, but the question pops up . . . what happened to Jagger as lyricist between Exile and GHS? He goes from wonderful, abstract imagery to lists of methods to kill people, .44s (twice), police brutality, overdoses, shlocky love ballads, and "silver bells they're a ringin', ding dong." Always mystified me.
