Most likely not true at all. About all of the guitars associated with Brian (which is different to 'Brian's guitars') have shown up after his death one way or another.

When the Hard Rock Vault in Orlando was in operation (I think my brother and I visited circa 2004), they had a guitar of Brian's. It was a white Vox, teardrop-shaped and in poor condition (broken strings, etc.). They also had a sweet letter he had written to a fan.

Are we sure about that? Some have survived, that is true. Do we know what happened to the Firebird? The Gretsch? His Rick 12? The Gibson used in 67 and 68? Hummingbird acoustics?

I might have seen that 'sweet fan letter' at the Universal Citywalk Hard Rock in L.A. a couple years back.

Just because his guitars have 'shown up', it doesn't mean that they were not stolen.

How can you not agree on facts? What a silly remark. I know it is more romantic to believe everything was stolen from him, but that's just not true.

The Harmony Stratone has shown up in the hands of a dentist friend and put up for auction. The Vox Teardrop and Gretsch Anniversary given away by Brian and now property of the Hardrock Cafe. Then the remaining guitars: most likely not 'owned' by Brian, but given or loaned to the Stones, just as any big band received instruments as promotion. The Casino was stolen on tour in Germany in '66. The ES-330 with nickel plated P90's has been used by Keith extensively, and shown up on the '69 tour and during recordings in '70. The LP Goldtop is now owned by Bill Wyman. The two sunburst Hummingbirds used since '65 can be seen in the hands of the Stones until at least '75 (Angie clip for example). The blonde Hummingbird is most likely the same Hummingbird as Keith played at Nellcote, and which Jagger has played since the early 90's. The 12-string Rickenbacker has been used, according to Taylor, by both Richards and Taylor in the early 70's. The non-reverse Firebird has shown up in the hands of Taylor in late 69, early 70, also indicating these where band instruments more than Jones's. At least one Vox Bijou was stolen during a tour and replaced, I don't know where the second one went. His Mellotron was reportedly shipped to his father.

Did I miss any instrument? Reportedly the Stones have various warehouses and storage rooms all over the world where they keep piles and piles of equipment and instruments, and they are also know for giving away much when they are not interested in them anymore. Also, a lot is stolen from hotel and dressing rooms over the years. But I wouldn't be surprised that when Keith opens his vaults hundreds of guitars fall out, including many associated with Brian, like the missing Firebird VII.

Mathijs
Edit: from another post I understand the Cleveland Hall of Fame museum has a Bijou that 'might'have belonged to the Stones.

Hi. Which Hard Rock Cafe has the Annie?

I don't know, I only know they bought the Teardrop and the Anniversary for 3500 pounds in the late 80's or early 90's.

Edit aha, 1984.

Dear Helen,

Thank you for your inquiry. Currently the Brian Jones Vox Teardrop guitar is located in the Hard Rock London Vault. The Vault is located on the bottom floor of the merchandise shop in London, which is across the street from the cafe. This was the same guitar we purchased from Sothebys in 1984, and was on display in the New York Hard Rock for many years. Guided tours of the Vault are complimentary, so if you are out that way, you must check it out!

Thank you, good post. Does any one individual have controlling interest of Hard Rock Cafe, or is it strictly a corporate group? Wonder if anyone actually gets to play these guitars. What a treasure Hard Rock has amassed. It must rival the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, but the Hall of Fame has some very significant items.

Doesn't Stones Inc. have its own 'graveyard' of guitars in storage? Didn't the Stones website have a photo of such a place? There could be a number of Brian guitars and Mick Taylor guitars all mixed in with what the band retains.

According to the Hardrock website the guitar is still there, in the vault. There is also a copy of that hand written note.

I wonder what happend to the sitars and the tanpura he used? According to Hendrix old girlfriend Kathy Etchingham Brian brought a sitar with him to a session he and Dave Mason had together with Jimi Hendrix at the Olympic Studios. This may indicate that he kept at least one sitar at home.
The Tanpura may of course have been borrowed of George Harrison, The sitar Brian used on Paint it Black ended up with a broken gourd, was fixed by a repairman in the US and then nobody seems to know where it went.

About the Dulcimer in Cleveland:
It's no Bijou but an acoustic instrument. It may be the one used on the studio recording of Lady Jane. But Brian probably had more than one.

I was just writing yesterday in the Brian Jones children thread about this guitar and it's whereabouts.

At the same time, a friend of mine was in New York City at the Hard Rock Cafe looking at Brian's signature Tear Drop guitar. Yes, it's in NYC right now.

Here's the pic he texted me:

Am I reading the below information correctly that there was on one Mark III and it was made for Brian Jones?

Also I wonder how much it sold for at Sotheby's Auction to the Hard Rock?

Brian Jones' Signature Teardrop Guitar

The Mark is an electric guitar made by Vox. The instrument is also known as the Vox Teardrop, but this is not the official name. The Vox Mark came in three variations, a 6 string (the Mark VI), a 9 string (the Mark IX) and a 12 string (the Mark XII).

In 1962 Vox introduced the pentagonal Phantom guitar, originally made in Kent, England but soon after made by EKO of Italy. It was followed a year later by the teardrop-shaped Mark VI, the prototype of which was made specifically for Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, using a non-tremolo Fender Stratocaster bridge. This Brian Jones Vox Teardrop Mark III left handed guitar

The Mark VI was released in three versions, as a 6-string, a 9-string, and a 12-string. The 9-string had three wound strings and three pairs of unwound strings.

The Phantom guitar received an international prize for best design when it was released.

Even though Vox discontinued the production of these guitars in the seventies, accurate copies of the Teardrop and other VOX models are still manufactured by Jack Charles of Phantom Guitarworks.

The 60 most valuable guitars ever sold at auction

Keith Richards' Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard

Price: $1,000,000+

Provenance: John Bowen (Mike Dean & The Kinsmen), Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), Mick Taylor (John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Rolling Stones), Cosmo Verrico (Heavy Metal Kids) with known usage by Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

Purchased second-hand by Richards before fame visited, this Les Paul Standard was used throughout the Rolling Stones’ US tours of 1964, on the Stones' famous Ed Sullivan Show television appearance and was used on hits such as Little Red Rooster, Time is on My Side, The Last Time, Get Off My Cloud, Let’s Spend the Night Together and when used through a Gibson Maestro pedal in Satisfaction, this guitar created what Gibson's official website refers to as "era-defining fuzz riff." Despite a host of famous users such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Billy Gibbons, Joe Walsh, Mark Knopfler, Ace Frehley and Mike Bloomfield, it's Keith Richards' 1959 Les Paul Standard with a retro-fitted Bigsby that has become the most expensive Les Paul Guitar of all-time, albeit not at auction and hence unverifiable.

Jimmy Page is known to have used this guitar at least once in recording sessions, and Eric Clapton used it during Cream's performance at the 1966 Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival. Richards sold the guitar to Mick Taylor, of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, and when Taylor replaced Brian Jones in The Rolling Stones in 1969 it returned to the band for a further two years before being apparently stolen in 1971, one story suggesting during the recording of Exile on Main St. and another suggesting it was taken from London’s Marquee Club after a gig there, though it ended up three years later in the ownership of Cosmo Verrico (Heavy Metal Kids), then Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake) who sold it to a UK collector in 2004. Ten in 2006 it sold to a Swedish collector for a price believed to be in excess of $1 million.

58 - Brian Jones 1960 Harmony Stratotone

Price: $130,824 (£79,250)

Auctioned: 1 July 2009 (Christies)

Provenance: This was the first brand name guitar owned by the man who named, founded and initially led the Rolling Stones: Brian Jones. Purchased in 1962, Jones used this guitar almost exclusively until the autumn of 1963 when the Stones signed with Decca Records.

According to Andy Babiuk & Greg Prevost's research, this guitar was used by Brian Jones on the "... unreleased, but widely available Glyn Johns produced IBC Studio recordings which included the tracks 'Road Runner,' Diddley Daddy,' 'I Want To Be Loved,' 'Honey What's Wrong' and 'Bright Lights, Big City' as well as the Stones first single 'Come On/I Want To Be Loved' released June, 1963 on Decca Records.

Bridges to Babylon rehearsals Sept. 1997. I think it was from a Mojo mag feature. May have been a Vox teardrop, but I would have to find the article to confirm.

The Firebird VII has shown up as well. It is in the hands of a British collector who also owns Keith's Hyde Park Flying V. The Firebird is refinished back to its original sunburst, and played extensively throughout the 70's.

This means that litereally all of Brian's guitar and instruments have shown up by now.

The same thing by the way for most of Keith Richards guitars that where used in the 1967 to 1975 period and either lost or stolen. All but the Ampeg Dan Armstrongs have shown up in the last few years.

Apparently all his instruments that he bought himself along with everything else in his house disappeared the day after his passing. The whole house was cleared of stuff (even things like his bed sheets) and no one seems to know where everything went or by whom it was cleared out. And neighbor of Brian's, a man called Trevor Hobley, allegedly reported seeing a large bonfire on Brian's estate the morning after his death. Even Brian's girlfriends private stuff was gone when she went back a couple of months after his death to retrieve them.. So all his "private" instruments are most likely long gone unfortunately sad smiley
