right now there are 3 1080i sources circulating:
- yours (wowow) 22 GB
- sky Great Britain 14 GB
- TrollHD, no info about the source 44 GB

I have used the BS.Player which is freeware. The file plays very smoothly all the time. Just try this on out.
I have to admit this is a pretty good point ;-)

Ah good news, wonder why I didn't see it with VLC, will look into it tomorrow.
So my reencode to 720p leaving the Audio (AC3/2.0) alone produced a 9Gb file and the quality is still excellent, hard to see any difference with the 1080p on my 47" screen and it plays much smoother with my (powerful) setup. I guess the SDH version used a much too aggressive compression ratio since it was said to have been produced from the 1080p broadcast.

Hm... Adding it into the library there should not be any problems 
have you already checked whether the file size is correct? About 21 GB? I assume this is not the first Full HD video that you are playing on your computer so your hardware is supposed to deal with it. I hope someone else here has got an idea because I'm a bit overextended concerning this issue. Sorry...
