And to celebrate the Italian Corriere della Sera publishes a nice slideshow dedicated to the Stones. Some new pics (for me at least)

Me, too. Although a lot of websites (including Stones on Decca) marks 17th April as being the release date, this is a record to be played anytime. Actually, I can say that this is a record that changed my life. smileys with beer

In some ways, it's still their best record.
No professional attitudes, just rock and roll straight out of the bag.
It still sounds as raw and pure as it did back then.

Yes, quite incredible. I find the same with Elvis records, even in mono. Just such a good sound to them.

Evening in my music room has just begun, LK4605 -1A/-1A is on the turntable just now....Well I'm a King Bee Baby....
Next up will be my -2A/-2A. Next up I think I will give one of my -1A/-3A's a spinn

It is a great album! I think listening to it this evening will be a nice way to start the Easter long weekend. thumbs up

I'm still kicking myself for not buying this on vinyl from my local charity shop. Spotted it in their window a few years ago. I love vinyl especially original. But the shop was closed at the time and I didn't get back there in time (was working long hours). I'm sorry I didn't just leave work early the next day. It might not have been an original (I never got to check) but it was priced as if it was.

Is that Phil Spector in pic# 18??

I'm listening to it right this minute. It's always a great start to a working day, always gets me rolling down that road, followed by 12X5, Now!, Out Of Our Heads, December's Children, etc.

I also have a Russian bootleg of Rolling Stones no. 1 (the UK version, but the German edition), with 8 bonus tracks, including the unreleased version of Tell Me, the original "pop" version of Poison Ivy, and a couple of versions of Fortune Teller, including the unreleased take 1.

I remember finally picking up a copy of the first U.K. pressing of this album while on vacation in London in 2004 at Music Exchange in Notting Hill Gate.

Hi Too Though,
I've 3 of them (LP's). SHORT TELL ME.
1) 1A-1A (with: I NEED YOU BABY) on cover and label.
2) 2A-1A (with: MONA)on cover and I NEED YOU BABY on label. Side 1: under the
LK.4605 is: M.C.P.S. BIEM-NCB
3) 2A-1A (with: MONA)on cover and label. Side 1: under the LK.4605 is:
M.C.P.S. N.C.B.
How it comes for LP2 with MONA on cover and I NEED YOU BABY on label: I don't know.

Tioms,

I do know that Jan Richardsson is a freak about LK 4605.
Who is able to say ""HOW MUCH LP's ARE IN CIRCULATION WITH A SHORT "" TELL ME""?

Actually the album was such a huge success, that it has been downhill ever since, at least as far as their home country is concerned grinning smiley.... With it 12 weeks at the top of the charts and 800 000 sold copies it still their best charted and most sold studio album in UK. By comparison, such landmark albums like BEGGARS BANQUET and SOME GIRLS sold about a fourth of it each - 200 000 sales are rather avarage for a Stones album. IT*S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL, an album having its 40th Anniversary, sold only a bit more than tenth of their debut ten years earlier (90 000 copies).

Of course, the competition was not such big in 1964, but that shouldn't hide the fact that the album THE ROLLING STONES was a huge thing in England back then.

Figuring out actual sale numbers is a speculative art, since during those days there were different ways to count them. The numbers I put above derive from early 90's NME. Our georgelicks who is a master in these things, offered some yaers ago a different one, based on some French source. In that one THE ROLLING STONES was also estimeted having sold about 900 000 copies in UK, but the numbers for BEGGARS BANQUET (250 000), IT'S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL (150 000) and SOME GIRLS (400 000) were clearly bigger. With its two comings, EXILE is cathing up the debut albums sales, being something like 800 000 copies in georgelick's statistics (if memory serves, I recall EXILE even going past by now, but I could be wrong). Their biggest sellers in UK have been BIG HITS (1.1 millions) and FORTY LICKS (1.3 million).

The only requirements I had on a Long Playing album at the time was that they contained at least 12 good songs, and Stones were one of the bands that always managed it..
