The Rolling Stones - London [820 047-2]

In July 1984 this CD appeared in the shops.

Made in West Germany by PolyGram.
Matrix #: 820 047-2 01#
Cold ended Tell Me (4.05)
STEREO???? HUH???? (Facepalm) winking smiley
This one is marked in Das Weissbuch (1991) as Version CD-G1 (see page 181)

Later it was reissued several times by PolyGram with 'blue and red' face.

Note - 'old fashioned' font on the logo and GEMA as a copyright society. Still STEREO???? winking smiley

And again

Notice font change for the logo. But still GEMA. Again STEREO???? winking smiley

And again

With MCPS but not GEMA. STEREO??? This is not funny...

All three 'blue and red' discs have the same matrix # 820 047-2 01#. I believe, those are from 84-85. All those contain cold ended Tell Me (4.05)

One of those above was marked in Das Weissbuch (1991) as Version CD-G2 (see page 181). I am not sure which one. Keep in mind that MCPS version is the most common one it was pressed in relatively large numbers. So if you are still hunting for the early pressing of this title - do not overpay on the secondary market for this one.

Later, the discs were pressed on PDO

Matrix #: 820 047-2 01# MADE IN W. GERMANY BY PDO
Still cold ended Tell Me (4.05).
Finally the disc is properly marked MONO.
This one is strange. The front booklet and backcover are almost the same as fro the first pressings and carry 'CD is Manufactured by PolyGram in Hanover' note but matrix is 'MADE IN W.GERMANY BY PDO'. I believe this is transitional PolyGram to PDO pressing from 1986 or 1987. Also there is additional code BA 900 on the back cover (bottom right corner above Compact Disc logo).

This one is not mentioned in Das Weissbuch (1991)

The same disc as above (with matrix 820 047-2 01# MADE IN W. GERMANY BY PDO and without tracklist) was used for 1988 reissue. This time they switch to 12 pages booklet without red banner in upper left corner

and add more info on the backcover

Next one on PDO came with matrix 820 047-2 02# MADE IN W. GERMANY BY PDO

Mastering was modified for this one. Tell Me is 3.52 and fades early.
It is marked in Das Weissbuch (1991) as Version CD-G3 (see page 181).

Matrix 820 047-2 02# MADE IN W. GERMANY BY PDO but with 'modern' logo printed on the label.

From now on an additional code BA 900 appears below the barcode

Another PDO edition with 'modern' London logo (probably 1990)

This time martix reads 820 047-2 03# MADE IN W. GERMANY BY PDO
For this disc Tell Me is 3.52 and fades early.

Actually all discs with matrix that has 02# or 03# contain Tell Me with fade.

And another one with 'modern' logo. This time with matrix 820 047-2 03# MADE IN GERMANY

I believe this one is from 1991 or 1992. PDO was dissolved and plant in Hanover was under PRS control.

Later there was a strange one.

No copyright printed on the face around the edge
'Old' logo, Matrix #: 820 047-2 03# MADE IN GERMANY
This one is from 1991 or 1992 or a bit later.

Again the disc with 'old' logo matrix #: 820 047-2 03# MADE IN GERMANY but with copyright.

And again with 'old' logo matrix #: 820 047-2 03# MADE IN GERMANY. This time the shape of the CD changed - it has 2 mm transparent ring around the central hole and stacking ring on the play surface.

This must be from 1992-1993.

With old logo and matrix 820 047-2 03# MADE IN GERMANY BY PMDC.
No copyright printed on the face around the edge (Thank you, rollingandre)

With old logo and matrix 820 047-2 03# MADE IN GERMANY BY PMDC. (Thank you, William-Lee)

The disc has it has 2 mm transparent ring around the central hole and stacking ring on the play surface. Judging matrix notation (PMDC) this one must be from 1994, most probably the last German pressing.

And finally - CD with clear hub and old logo

It seems that matrix is 820 047-2 03# but it is hard to read as it is printed on the edge. This one belongs to late PDO or very early PRS days, most probably 1991-1992.

There is one with clear hub but 'modern' logo too. Do not know matrix #. There were conflicting reports about 02# and 03# as only upper part of matrix is seen.

Exotic one
The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones (1964) album on London. From 1990.
Catalog # 844 055-2
Matrix: SERVICIOS IBERICOS ENTERTAINMENT S.A. 844055-2 CDT BERLIN
Editado en Espana por PolyGram Iberica S.A.

There are at least 3 versions from Spain. This one, the one similar but with misprint on the label

and SALVAT edition

All three came with the same matrix.

Really strange one. Made in the USA. See Label code 0501 = London USA on the back cover (bottom right corner).

This one is strange, because the common wisdom is - London CDs were not sold in the USA. However, here we go. (And BTW, apparently, there is the whole set of 17 CDs). I do not own this one and can not tell you about the mastering etc.

Another regional product. Now from Down Under.

It comes with modified mastering and Tell Me with fade.
Unusual is also the front booklet. It is a fold out poster.

First Japanese pressing P33L-25014 from 1987

Second Japanese pressing P25L-25031 from 1989

Third Japanese pressing POCD-1911 from 1995

All three Japanese pressings utilize the same mastering. Tell Me here is ending cold at 4.05, like on the first version of the W. Germany CD. However, the final EQ and peak levels are different comparing to W. German CD.

No images of French, Brazil and Argentina CDs yet.

Interesting, even the later reissues refer to recordings (c) and (p) detail to London/Decca, rather than ABKCO.
Also, tracks 5,6.9 (Stones originals)copyrighted and published by Southern, not ABKCO
