Cool laid back cover of the late great Warren Zevon classic. Enjoy.

Well it looks like John Mayer is really trying hard to cop Jerry's style of lead playing in this band, he's obviously spent some time studying it. Jury's still out on this line up. Thanks for the post.

do you think he is doing better than Trey did over the summer?

I was at the show on Halloween, and it was awesome. Mayer is doing a much better job of channeling Jerry than Trey did at the Fare Thee Well shows. I'll be at the Garden for their next show on 11/7, and can't wait to see Mayer shredding again!

I haven't actually seen enough of either show(s) to make such a judgement. The little I've seen of the group with Mayer makes me think he is actually better at copying Jerry's style, not that that is necessarily a good thing. The whole spirit of Dead music is more about experimentation and doing your own thing but if Mayer is able to accomplish that while obviously emulating Jerry in such as obvious way, more power to him. I suspect the summer shows were more in the spirit of GD music in no small part due to the presence of Phil Lesh and great players like Bruce Hornsby who obviously had spent time playing with the original band. Trey, on the surface, seems like a better fit for the jam band style of Dead music but Mayer might figure it out in a hurry, he's a good guitarist.

Here is an interesting review from Rolling Stone of their MSG show:

A friend who is a total total Deadhead (yeah, used total twice, G is that much a Deadhead) sent this to me. He didn't send anything but the link, but I think it's his comment upon what some of the remaining members of the GD are doing. No offense to anyone out there re the link. It is what it is.

Can't we just bury the Dead once and for all?

Well pretty sure they were buried with Jerry but the ghost of what they were is still alive and well for better or worse. As one of the main things about the shows seems to be the spirit and interaction of the audience I suspect the ghost will be a bit harder to make go away.

Have you ever been to a Grateful Dead concert? One thing they share with the Stones is that no matter if you like their recent recorded output, the shows are something else all together. smoking smiley

Re Stones 50 comment: The Dead shall rise again. No Stone(s) will be overturned in the Dead's search for relevancy in the musical afterworld. Hang garlands of garlic upon thy door; drink the holy water and sprinkle the remnants upon the floor.

I'm finally beginning to not hate the Dead, now that there's fewer of them in the band and they actually have a singer in John Mayer and I don't hear those god awful harmonies. Still, it is in the tradition of the Dead in that it's a really crappy cover. Still love John Mayer.

So how many hundreds of different versions are there of this clip from the @#$%& movie on all topics, artists, etc.? The first one was amusing, the rest just copies.

(amazing, you cant even write @#$%&'s name here!; so the whole thread will soon be deleted because it assuredly offends the one who counts here. It doesn;t offend me, it's just not funny after dozens of different versions).

As often is the case I heard this one on a commercial recently. I didn't listen to it much back then but when I hear it now I realize it's a really good, timeless pop song... (Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere)

Hmmm, Stonesour is that a coverband?

Re: gimme shelter new cover

Here it is. They do a pretty good copy, down to the tremelo guitar on the intro! Nice backgroud vocals but overall a bit too close guitar-wise to the original, note for note solos, intro and fills, etc. If the drummer had more of a Charlie sound to the drums it would almost be a dead ringer.

Probably the closest to the Stones I ever heard anyone pull off and kudos for that, certainly better than some live Stones performances of the song but as a studio effort I'd give it an A- for performance and a D- for originality. I guess that averages out to a C or something.
