is gimme shelter in the key of a? when i solo using the key of a scale or d mixolydian it sounds okay but not great, or should i stick in the key of c#?

I think it's better to do it in c#. Better for solos and it's the original key i guess.

try the C# minor pentatonic scale starting with C# on the 9th fret, E string. then E, F# and G# on the A string, B and C# on the D string, E, F# on the D string, G# and B on the B string and C# and E on the e strning again. That would be the C# minor pentatonic scale. Hope I explained it in a way u understand it, I'm not sure I'd know, what I mean...

yeah, just do "the box" starting at the 9th fret.

the scale is then : root note - little triad - fourth - fifth - minor seventh

which is exsactly the blues scale...

Yeah, just do pentatonic minor C#. The only problem is that it will only get you through half of Taylor's '72 and '73 Gimme Shelter solo's!

I see other people have already explained this to you but I think most people (at least most blues players) don't really think of scales in terms of notes, but rather in terms of patterns. They have the pattern on the fretboard of the notes they can play and where their fingers can go. You do have to keep the location of the root notes in mind but you more or less just stay within the box patterns and (for the most part) start and end your solos and licks on a root note.

a good way to start one of the licks on a Gimme Shelter solo would be to bend a 12th fret B-note on the B-string to C#. I know, I know, it's very elementary! But what I mean it kind of works even better for this song than the old IV to V-bend. Shit, I use this minor pentatonic scale for nearly all my solos, and even resort to very similar licks, I could almost play my Brown Sugar-fake over GS, only half a step higher. Oh well, maybe I'll get out of that rut one of these days.
On that note (duh), sometimes one might try and add this odd note (G) to that scale:
c#-e-f#- G -g#-b-c#
works in the right places
