who is Matt Clifford?

I've seen him in the Being Mick documentary, I've seen him onstage with Mick Jagger during his Goddess In The Doorway gigs, and now I've seen him onstage with the Rolling Stones during the Urban Jungle/Steel Wheels tour and I've seen him in BBC's Stones in Marocco documentary. Who is this man? I can't find much about him with Google. Is he a producer??? Those are the only times I've seen him in Stones(-related) footage. Does he still work with the Stones?

He's a PR man - try googling MAX Clifford instead.

Matt Clifford was the second keyboard player during the Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle tour. Also he played on some of the tracks on the 'Steel Wheels' album.

Beast, you're confusing the poor boy...!

On rare occasions. He was more Mick's guy and Keith didn't dig him too much. Electronic keyboards guy. Keith brought in Blondie to balance things out.

Yikes - so I am (and myself in the process)!

Note to self: must stop reading this board when I'm supposed to be working.

Yeah he co-produced and played on SOL, and played on Rain Fall Down, as well as helping with 'pre-production'.

Along with keyboard and arranger duties for the STEEL WHEELS album and world tour, he played keyboards at the Jan 1991 sessions for Highwire and Sex Drive, was keyboardist, arranger, co-producer, and occ. songwriting partner for Mick's GODDESS IN THE DOORWAY album, handled pre-production on 3 of the 4 new songs cut for 40 LICKS, and handled pre-production and keyboard duties for 2 tracks for A BIGGER BANG receiving a co-producer credit on one of them as well. I think its safe to assume Mr. Clifford will figure in future Jagger solo projects and/or Stones sessions.

The Voodoo Loungue Tour was the only Clifford-less AND Blondie-less tour.
1 keyboardist, 4 horns and 2 b/u/ vocalists. It was their 'stripped down' line-up - back when Keef'n'Woody still played guitar.

Indeed. Now what have we been telling you about this work/life balance business ? Well ... it's to be less of one (work preferably) and more of the other (life ideally). Then you wouldn't get your "Matts" and your "Maxs" muddled up !!

The "2000 light years from home" guy. Synths. Very different keyboard style from Chuck Leavell.

Don't forget - he also is the only person to ever play the french horn into to You Can't Always Get onstage - with a french horn (not a synth, sax or trumpet).

Jes Christ, how do you know all this stuff, thats a lot of details about a support person for the Stones? Have you followed his career and if so, why? I find it rather interesting.

On the Licks Tour somebody, not him, played the french horn as an intro to YCAGWYW.

I think most threads about Matt Clifford have been deleated after the discussion got heated

Timbernardis, I am usually blessed with a very good memory. It has been known to fail me and I remember things contrary to how they actually happened usually because I read something too quickly the first time around. You could accuse me of many things, but following Matt Clifford's career isn't one of them. I generally remember things like credits and other minor details for any CD, movie, or book I own. The trick is to make a photographic memory pay for you.
