Bill has the Wyman bass there. I believe that pic is from Top of the Pops - January 25th 1967.

Did he use flat-wounds on the Travis Bean?
Any pictures or interviews that show or say?

As far as I know Wyman only used flatwounds, and I am sure he used them on the Travis Beans, there's plenty of pictures in the Philip Kamin books.

thanks HM - so much for the photographers' dating (as usual!)
i'll correct that, to avoid confusing future readers. but!
i just looked at the may 27th 1966 RSG, and Bill does have a teardrop bass -
and Keith's in a white jacket too, so it's not *totally* off-base :E
here are the three may 66 RSG numbers - ahh, i love these!

i can't find Ruby Tuesday from the january 67 Top of the Pops, but here's LStNT:

[scratching head] does that look like the show that photo's from?

I'm now certain that it's from January 67. :-()

The pics that feature Keith in the white jacket loaded with his les paul custom are probably from the rehearsals for the show. There's also some pics from the same time of Keith playing piano and Brian playing recorder. The stage and lighting in the pic you posted and the lstnt totp's footage match.

Just found some pics of the stones appearing on top of the pops in February 1966 right before the Australian tour and Bill has a Wyman bass.

cool - so that newspaper story is vindicated. very nice!
maybe he's got the Framus in all the Australian photos precisely because the Vox was stolen.

I didn't doubt it, but someone over at the plexi palace, vintage amp forum did. What can I say!? My OCD kicked in and I had to find a pic of Bill from before that tour with a Wyman bass! :-()

EDIT: Although, the bass pictured in February 1966 has a different bridge to the one returned to Bill decades later. Hmmm...

I believe the second pic is not at the marquee but at the crawdaddy. Can anybody confirm?

yeah, it's the Crawdaddy. i'll edit that - thanks.
and it was Bill Williams who took the photo, not Dezo Hoffman, so i've fixed that too.

it seems to be late april 1963. it was taken by a Record Mirror photographer;
maybe he went to the Crawdaddy with the editor Peter Jones on april 21st, or maybe it was another occasion.
it would be brilliant to hear from anyone who knows for sure!

How Bill Wyman Got His Bass Back

Bill Wyman's bass was rumored to have been stolen when the Stones played in Wellington in 1966.
Recently, when the current owner, Sceats, discovered that it really did belong to Wyman, the bass was returned to Wyman.
(Vox made a few hundred of the bass guitars in the 1960s and the story went that one had been endorsed by Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman.)

Wyman wrote, "I just couldn't believe it had turned up and that you were trying to make contact to return it to me - my profound thanks to you."

Framus

1960's Framus with "humbug finish." (Formerly owned by Bill Wyman.)

Any pictures of Keith / Mick Taylor / Ronnie playing bass?

We can see Keith playing bass on SFTD in the Jean-Luc Godard's movie.

Found some more pics and info on the violin bass Bill is shown using from late 1968 - spring/summer 1969.

VOX ASTRO IV V273 BASS

An Italian made electric acoustic bass guitar with the popular violin shape body. Has built-in G tuner, distortion booster, treble and bass boosters. Has an all new fast and easy to fret neck, with double T-Bar and adjustable truss rod. Has two exclusive Vox Ferro-Sonic high output wide range pickups. Fully adjustable bridge. One volume, two tone controls, 3-position pickup selector switch. Has jumbo chrome plated machine heads.

Olympic Sound Studios, London - Spring 1969 - probably Ethan Russell and/or Eric Hayes

I thought he said he used the modified Framus for recording almost exclusively?

He may have said that, but that's clearly not the case.

I think I've managed to identify a bass Bill used during late 1968...

ITV Studio One Television facilities, Wembley, London, England - 29th November 1968 - courtesy of Daily Mirror Archives

Londonderry Hotel, London, England - 8th/9th December 1968 - no photographer credits given

...

I've mistakenly believed it was a Rickenbacker, but it appears that Rickenbacker never made a bass using the Rickenbacker 330 guitar styled body. However, further digging revealed that the company Shaftesbury did make such a bass. Shaftesbury musical products were imported in to the UK by Rose Morris during the 60's and 70's from Japan and/or Italy.

Here's a bass that is probably the same as Bill's

Does anybody have a pic of the amp Bill showed up with
at his Stones audition that everyone went gaga over and it
got him in?

Hey guys, I just noticed something funny: it looks like there are only three strings on that Contra bass; with Keith and Bill bowing. It's
so funny: Keith just can't resist removing a string, haha..

I saw that Rickenbacker this morning in another thread; but in that thread I could not really tell I thought maybe he was just holding a guitar for miming purposes. So it IS a Bass.

On his book "Rolling with the Stones" Wyman says he made his first fretless bass from an English solidbody bass "Dallas Tuxedo" which he bought second-hand in early 1961 for 8 GBP. He used to refers to it as "the home-made bass" because tho' he didn't build the guitar he modded the shape of the body, took the frets out, and refinished it (all this before he joined the Stones). The original idea was to refret the bass as part of the mods, but since he liked the sound of it with no frets the refret was never done. He used it during the first year with the Stones before buying his Framus Star Bass on September 2,1963. I repeat: all this according to Bill himself.
The Japanese bass theory was mentioned on the book "How The Fender Bass Changed The World", by Jim Roberts but according to what Wyman says it's pure folklore or speculation.
Wyman's real Dallas Tuxedo bass is currently on display at Sticky Fingers (Bill's restaurant) in London.

This is a Dallas Tuxedo as it probably was Bill's when he originally got it:

This is the real Wyman's bass after the mods:

This last pic shows Wyman using the bass for recording "Simpathy For The Devil" and the instrument appears with a second refinish now swapping colors of body and guard for the exact opposite.

Cheers, M.

Also of interest is that Bill is shown using one of the rare Vox 4 series bass amplifiers in July 1966.

One of the many pleasures of the re-mastered Ya-Yas is Bill Wyman's playing and his sound. Was he playing a Mustang Bass for those shows at MSG, or was it the Armstrong? Either way it's pure r&b mud. I have tried to re-create his tone with my Mustang Bass and cannot do it.

I started to lose my love for the Who when John Entwistle decided he really was a lead guitarist instead of a bass player. His trebly tone on the tours after Moon died was horrible. I saw The Who at MSG shortly after Entwistle's untimely death and was pleasantly surprised at Pino Palladino. But I digress...

For me, the integrity of the Rolling Stones as a band stopped when Bill left. Now we have the Fabulous Rolling Stones Review Featuring Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood. That doesn't make it bad, it just isn't the Stones without that Bill thing.

Just to ad: Wyman clearly liked this bass so much he used it on record until at least 1978. It is a bit funny actually, there's many pics of the Stones in the studio in the 70's using the best&most expensive gear, and there is Wyman with his home-made bass...
