By the way, there's quite some luthiers building copy's of the Vox Bijou.

Mathijs

I searched for electric dulcimers, but didn't manage to find anyone that built there's the same as the bijou. Got a link to one that does?

There's many luthiers building the exact Apalachian dulcimers as the Vox Bijou, and most offer the fit a pickup or piezo. There's even home-build kits available. Just google "electric dulcimer"!

Ah, but they sound different, especially the piezo crap. Most builders seem to want to eliminate the very things that make the bijou sound the way it does.

Have you tried e-mailing the Voxshowroom site?
I did that a few years ago about an amp question, and they answered back.
They might have some info on the Bijou (mind you, it was a few years ago).
If you knew what pickup they used on it, you could maybe buy a second-hand one,
slap a similiar pickup on it, etc...
Brian's was a semi-hollowed body, right?
Could be a fun project putting one together, if you're into that sort of thing.

I asked around with specific questions and met with some guarded replies and non replies.

The pickup looks like a run of the mill vox guitar one, angled to catch all of the strings and fit the dulcimer.

Speaking of Brian's 12-string Rickenbacker, is that another guitar of his
that went missing?

I read an interview in which Mick Taylor mentioned some of guitars stolen from Nellcote. He said one was a Rickenbacker (not sure if he said a 12 string). I seem to recall him saying it had gold hardware. Maybe Brian's Ricky?

You know, it would be nice for someone in the Stones' camp to shed some light on some of these guitars. Keith? Mick? What about Brian's Firebird, the one played on Ed Sullivan? That's almost as iconic as the Vox teardrop in a way. One would think Keith for sure would know. C'mon Keith, talk! While you're at it, tell us if that was really you playing the slide on MLH . . .

The 1963-1965 Mk 1 Firebird VII that Jones used, and I hesitate to say he personally owned was sold by the Rolling Stones management shortly after Brian died. It was played at a concert in October of 1969 after some work was done to it. The guitar is now in private hands

In private hands? Interesting. Much has been said about Keith owning a lot of Brian's guitars, but it seems like that just might be another myth. For all I know, he just owns one of Brian's Vox teardrops, the one which Woody wanted to play in Toronto in 1989 (but was scolded by Keith- "Get your fucken hands off of it!"). I wonder how much the Firebird would fetch at auction these days?

I know how much the Gibbo was sold for, the Cheque was made out for between £200 - £300, which was quite a lot according to second hand guitar prices then.

Keith Richards 'owning' Jones guitars is not a myth, I don't think Brian necessarily owned the guitars that he was associated with. But what happened to the Firebird suggests that unless you have access to the paperwork when the instruments were purchased then it's a field that is open to speculation, but in the case of the Firebird this is less so. Suffice it to say I think its a grey area generally.

This story was told by Wood, and involved the Vox Mandolin.

Brian had two teardrops, the six string prototype, and a 12 string.

Did Brian's Vox Mando guitar ever got used on a Rolling Stones album? It seems like they prefered the mandolin setting on the mellotron instead of the real thing.

I used to believe that the Mando was used for the riff on Mother's Little Helper but Keith's story about the acoustic 12-string put an end to that (if now Keith is the one who played it).

>> Keith's story about the [12-string on Mother's Little Helper] <<

that one goes like this:

(The strange guitar sound is) a 12-string with a slide on it. It's played slightly Oriental-ish.
The track just needed something to make it twang. Otherwise, the song was quite vaudeville in a way.
I wanted to add some nice bite to it. And it was just one of those things where someone walked in
and, Look, it's an electric 12-string. It was some gashed-up job. No name on it. God knows where it came from.
Or where it went. But I put it together with a bottleneck. Then we had a riff that tied the whole thing together.
And I think we overdubbed onto that. Because I played an acoustic guitar as well.

Quick further addition: There are 2 guitars playing the motif on MLH, one sounds kinda normal, the other wonky and shaky. thumbs up

Sorry SSSOUL for responding a bit late, but the guitar Brian plays on the 1963 b/w photo is a Harmony Stratetone. In fact he had this guitar already before the Rollin' Stones" came into being. So in fact it's Brians first "Rolling Stones" guitar.
The present owner apparently is the son of an English laywer, who was friends with Eric Easton (together with Andrew Oldham managing the early Stones). When Easton made a deal with the Vox company to replace the "old stuff", Easton gave (or sold) the guitar to that laywer, who passed it on to one of his three sons.

The guitar has been on show at least once on a "Brian Jones" Fanclub event in Cheltenham.

So it's two guitars then... I think you're right on that one. One of the guitars sounds pretty detuned. Love it!

I bought one recently, I think it's slightly earlier than Brians due to the extended Y on Harmony and the lack of 'steel reinforced neck' print on the headstock. It has the same dual vol/tone pots, pickups.

Probably going to sell it though.

He may never have actually owned them in the first place...

According to some Beat Instrumentals, Brian did not outright own the Rickenbacker guitars he played, Brian and Keith went halfs to replace a stolen one, and Keith bought one himself outright, he says something along the lines of ''No doubt Jonesy will hog it!''.

And of course most guitars where actually given to the Stones for promotion -the Firebirds, the Vox-es, the Casino's, so basically not owned by anyone particular.
