You Don’t Have To Mean It

Oh oh oh

You don't, you don't have to mean it
You just got to say it anyway
I just need to hear those words for me
Baby, baby, baby

You don't have to say too much
Baby, I wouldn't even touch you anyway
I just want to hear you say to me

(Sweet lies) Baby, baby
Dripping from your lips, ooh yeah
(Sweet sighs) Say to me
Come on and play, play with me, baby, mm-mm

(You don't, you don't) No, you don't have to mean it (You don't have to mean it)
You've just got to say it to me, baby
And whisper, whisper, whisper in my ear (I don't believe)
Baby, baby, baby, baby, yeah

(I don't believe)

I wouldn't want to use you
Ooh I wouldn't blame you anyway
If you never ever spoke to me (I don't believe)

Mm, just say those little words
Sit on my shoulder like a little bird
Baby, sing those words for me

(Sweet lies) Baby, baby
Dripping from your lips (In the darkness)
(Sweet sighs) Don't make me cry
Baby, baby, baby, you know

You know what I want to hear (Dripping from your lips)
I've got to tell you, baby (Dripping from your lips)

Uh-huh, you don't have to say too much (You don't have to mean it)
Whisper, whisper, baby, baby
I just want to hear you say to me (I don't believe)
Baby, baby, baby, baby, yeah

You don't have to mean it (You don't have to mean it)
Baby, just say it anyway
I just need to hear those words from your sweet lips (I don't believe)
Those sweet lips

(You don't have to mean it)
(You don't have to mean it) Yeah
(I don't believe)

You don't have to shout across the room (You don't have to mean it)
(You don't have to mean it)
Whisper in my ear, baby, yeah (I don't believe)
(You don't have to mean it)
(You don't have to mean it)

This is one of the Stones tracks from the later period I would not want to be without. Great swaying groove, funny but true lyrics. My favorite KR song off a Stones album this century.

Yeah, totally agree with Teddy. One of my alltime KR greatest songs, together with Run Rudolph Run.

Agree. One of a handful of Post-Wyman Stones songs worth listening to twice. Finally the Stones pull off a reggae song with some credibility. Interesting to note Mick Jagger was nowhere near this song.

I think this is one of Keith's total winners in late era. Apart from his solo albums his Stones contributions have been IMO too many ballads.

What I appreciate and really respect about this production is how much is going on; yet it never feels overcrowded or muddied.

My ring tone is this entire number. Gorgeous! Keith sings it so pretty
"Sit on my shoulder like a little bird"

The story goes that he wrote it in a brothel where he'd gone to spend a few days just to get away :E

Very nice, one of their attempts at reggae that works very well.

Yes, he wrote about it in Life. I think he said he went there for...inspiration? winking smiley

Whatever, doesn't matter, it's one heck of a song.

You know what I want to hear...

Yes, Keith tells in his book LIFE that he was inspired in a Jamaican brothel.
And he dindn´t even touched one of the pretty little black girls ;-)

One of my favorite Keith songs. Put it on in the car all the time.

It is interesting that Mick isn't on this track, and I wonder if Keith isn't addressing Mick here, like, "C'mon, just tell me we're still best friends. You don't have to mean it."

Of course he did not. He´s married.

The song is a highlight on B2B, one of their most uneven albums ever. One of Keith´s nicest reggae attempts. Sooner or later GasLightStreet will come by and tell us that the song isn´t reggae but to me it is, it has a warm and sunny island-feeling. Best Keith-song on the album, no doubt. His next solo-album - which will be released in 2036 - should be a reggae-album.

Fantastic track!

Definitely! I'm surprised by the great feedback on this one, it seems to get bashed a lot. Possibly the naysayers haven't gotten around to posting yet.

A great grooving reggae'ish tune, love the horns, and Keith nails the vocals! Love the "Ooohhhh"s in this one.

Pleasant but quite forgettable. Keith stole his own lyric “Dripping from your lips” from his vastly superior solo track, “Words of Wonder”.

Pretty good. It sounds like a Keith solo effort rather than a Stones song which isn't necessarily a bad thing - the opposite is usually true with Mick - but Boz Scaggs taking the lead for a few verses might've made this something truly memorable. Somebody said Keith nailed the vocals, which is true - he doesn't get any better than this after the voice drop - but he's still not much of a crooner.

Pleasant enough Keith track and a decent foray into reggae - indeed could have/should have been on a Keith solo album.
Charlie's drumming is a bit too up front and lacking vibe which makes the tune a bit generic and sterile. Partial production problem, but also the way he plays it.
Too much 'oom-pah' whereas he could have reversed the beat, maybe slowed it down, and added a few little fills in between would have helped.

Jeez, talk about nitpicking. This is a drummer (with Wyman) who artfully adapted to a multitude of styles from blues to psychedelia to disco.

Lovely song. However, the production - as with many B2B tracks - is a bit sterile.

Just love those horns and Keith's vocals. There are less prominent guitars and more straightforward drums than on other Stones reggae tracks here.

What I like about B2B is the production, they've certainly had more sterile releases.

Tracks like How Can I Stop, Lowdown and Thief In The Night sound excellent, while many other tracks lack warmth, imo. There is no "one production" of this album, there is several - hence many tracks have a different sound.

Production techniques and arrangement choices are at times interesting on B2B, imo, but the cohesive sound is not there.

Yeah I love and appreciate Charlie - no need to be condescending and preach about him to me.
But since people have been labeling this a 'reggae' song, the only thing that prevents this from being a truly great reggae song is probably the drumming IMO.
Bad production and a drum beat that sounds like a drum machine. He's played better on other Stones reggae tunes, i.e. Too Rude and Cherry Oh Baby.

Too Rude is not Charlie, but I agree, Hairball.

Ahhh, thanks Dandelion - just goes to show you can't believe everything on the internet (in this case Kenos page)
And who would that drumming on Too Rude? Looking at Dirty Work on wiki (another reliable source haha), and all I can find is:
"Charlie Watts' involvement in the recording sessions was also limited", & " Steve Jordan and Anton Fig play drums on some tracks"...no other details given.

Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha. Well, for one thing, You Don't Have To Mean It is more reggae than DIRTY WORK is an album.

Great tune. Keith's 3 on BRIDGES make the album for me. Great tune with an obvious nod to the Caribbean with a hint of Motown under it.
