Changing the lyrics permanently
Date: June 20, 2016 14:20

Some songs the Stones perform live either evolved lyrically, or had a change in the original lyrics when those songs made their live debut.

Wild Horses:
«...after love dies» instead of «...after we die»

Miss You:
Lots of different words in this section: «Hey, what's the matter, man...»

Some Girls:
«Black girls...»

Do you have other examples? And why do you think Mick changed the lyrics?

Miss You....often just improvised I suspect

[the lyrics for this song are really there just so the singer has something to do other than swing his guitar and hips around ;^)]

Wild Horses...

That one's interesting but I wouldn't try to guess.

Some Girls..

..Just to please the politically correct brigade ;^)

Brown Sugar...."just like a young man should." Always this way live, not on the studio versions.

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

Star Star:

They removed the John Wayne-verse after he died, and replaced it with one about Jimmy Page.

«...and Jimmy Page was all the rage, I could not see the reason why»..

Alzheimers?

to be serious: these are and there are only minimal lyrical changes (compared to what Bob Dylan used to do)

Spider and the FLy:
"She was common, flirty, she looked about thirty"

On stripped it changed into:
"She was [something], [something], she looked about fifty.

I bet by now she looks about eighty. :-)

I don't think we've been responsible for killing the Kennedys for quite a while.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about permanent, consistent change of lyrics here.

The Miss You-lyrics, with «...let's go down and have a nasty time» are not improvised.

Nothing about Keith is consistent smoking smiley

i'd like to hear them play 'Under My Thumb'
live again..

to see if "squirming dog" has been permanently changed to "charming woman"

as I heard on a version, but Im unable to find it.

besides that, its a great one live.

Not always. I think Jagger went back to the original lyric line more or less recently.

He has also alternated with «young boy».

from DP ^

'nasty time' is not used often. First time I heard that phrase was live in San Diego. Surprised me. Okay, my knees buckled.

I think it's only now and then, when Mick's perhaps feeling....

How about swearing?

I think that the opening line of Tumbling Dice has a dozen variations.

Rip This Joint - there was a line about Hilary Clinton making blowjob one time, if I remember correctly, right?

Doesn't Mick often change Start Me Up from "if you start me up" to "once you start me up?"

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

What's the age of the girl in Stray Cat Blues?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

She'll be about 60 by now winking smiley

[That was another concession to the politically correct brigade as she went from 13 to 16 .
I don't suppose 13 would have raised too many eye brows in some states back in the 60s...but, thankfully, times change.
Just don't see why we have to change lyrics that were of their age and reflecting attitudes of the time.

To be fair to Mick, he's obviously thought about all this and you have to respect his consideration of these sensitive issues.

That was a key line in the original. Why did Mick stop singing that? And what does he replace it with? It takes a real bite out of the original, brilliant composition imho.

I think that was during Mick Jaggers solo concert at the Webster Hall when he was promoting 'Wandering Spirit'

Jagger's enunciation is not always the best, but I thought I heard, "She was nifty, thrifty, she looked about fifty.." I could be wrong...

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

That's what I thought he said. I guess these days he could say something like "she was common, heavenly, she looked about seventy"!!!

Mick obviously has used song books lyric sheets to remember lines to songs.

They are not always accurate.

The one that got the most attention from me was in "it's only rock n roll"

For the past few years he would sing "feelings with blood on the page"

and has since gone back to the original "spill it all over the stage"
