You Better Move On

You ask me to give up the hand of the girl I love
You tell me I'm not the man she's worthy of
But who are you to tell who to love?
That's up to her, yes and the Lord above
You better move on

Well I know you can buy her fancy clothes and diamond rings
But I believe she's happy with me without those things
Still you beg me to set her free
But my friend that will never be
You better move on

Now I don't blame you for loving her
But can't you understand, man, she's my girl?
And I'm never, never ever going to let her go
Cause I, yeah, I love her so

Well I think you better go now, I'm getting mighty mad
You ask me to give up the only love I've ever had
Maybe I would, oh but I love her so
I'm never going to let her go
You better move on
Yeah, you better move on
Yeah, you better move on
Yeah, you better move on

Nice little tune. Worked well live, too.

This is one of my all-time-early-Stones-favorites, it is simply wonderful. I know some other versions of that song, but none is as touching as this. A great rendition of a marvelous tune. I love it.

Ahhhh, vintage early Stones. An absolutely terrific cover, one of the best they’ve done, I dare say. It is so stately and elegant in its carriage, yet there is a coiled threat of violence. Jagger, barely out of his teens, is already mesmerizing. Keith and Brian provide lovely, perfectly-timed guitar licks. And those harmonies from Bill and Brian are just sooooo tasty, transporting me to a ’50s dream world of milkshakes at the diner and slow dancing at the sock hop.

One of the early highligts. No doubt.

You can see the roots of Tell Me (You're Coming back to Me) on this.

Sure it´s sentimental, maybe even schmaltzy. But so are most of the great soul ballads, aren´t they.

Not a bad cover considering the early innocent times for the Stones, but they don't add anything unique to Alexander's original which is far superior.

Arthur Alexander was also an influence on the Beatles. You can hear some of his vocal styling in early Beatles stuff along with the Stones. There's a nice cover version of this song by the late Willie DeVille out there on the Tube.

The Beatles covered Anna.

Arthur Alexander somehow made an enormous impact on the British Beat Group scene.
Stones also did Go Home Girl (bootleg) and the Fab 4 (as well as their excellent rendition of Anna) covered Shot Of Rhythm and Blues, Where Have You Been, Soldier Of Love as well as using the "Arthur Alexander" beat on In My Life and All I've Got To Do.
His songs/the songs he recorded were covered by practically every Mersey Beat group as well as Johnny Kidd and The Pirates, Dusty Springfield, The Hollies, Jerry Lee, Ike and Tina Turner and many others.
Many of the cover versions are excellent but if you don't know Arthur Alexander's versions, do yourself a favour and pick up one of the available cds of his early Dot Records recordings and see why all those great groups thought so much of him.

You Better Move On is great; the Stones' version and Arthur's too!

He was a great singer and is the only songwriter whose songs have been covered on studio albums by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan!

There's a great tribute album to Arthur Alexander, entitled "Adios Amigo", which has some great covers by Nick Lowe, Zucchero, John Prine, etc.

Cristiano, do you know if that release also has the other tracks ... the additional ones i see on the super deluxe grrrr are:

1. Route 66 BBC Session
2. Cops And Robbers BBC Session
3. You Better Move On BBC Session
4. Mona BBC Session

I have them on my bootlegs, pretty good quality, I doubt they could be much better, but it is 'official' so I need to have it!

Yes, a nice cover of an underappreciated songwriter (except, of course, by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones).

I'm glad someone drew attention to the Stones version of 'You Gotta Move On,' a nice Arthur Alexander ballad. FYI, sounds similar (at least as a recording, in terms of the overall sound but not the tempo) to the Stones song 'I'm Free.' Maybe because I first listened to them together as they both appear if I'm not mistaken on the U.S. album release December's Children.

Alright, I'll bite, 'cause I don't feel like lookin' it up - what AA songs did Elvis (are we talkin' Costello or Presley) and Dylan cover? There's also a connection between AA and Tom Jones in that each did a version of Detroit City. TJ's version owes a lot to country singer Bobby Bare's version. And Bobby Bare has a connection to the Stones in that his version of the Streets of Baltimore can be heard (somewhat) in Gram Parson's version/arrangement of the same song. And we all know Gram and KR were best budz.

Dylan covered Sally Sue Brown

AA recorded Burning love before Elvis... although not penned by AA

As far as I know, those are the only bonus tracks on some editions of Crossfire Hurricane.
