Try as I might, I can never manage to like any of Between the Buttons, and also not this song. (I am mainly referring to the UK version, because at least the USA version has Let's Spend the Night Together and Ruby Tuesday.)
I don't like the rhythm, I don't like the backing vocals, I don't like the melody, I don't like any of the instruments. And really, the lyrics are rather petty and nasty too, arent't they?

What a spooky song. Where the hell did this one come from? With that crazy marimba it's like a cross between some pilled up mod jazz and pre-psychedelic r'n'b.

It really shows the Stones going off in their own direction and not keeping an eye on their main rivals The Beatles.

I mean who else does this one sound like? The Kinks? Not really. The Small Faces? I don't think so. The Who? No crashing power chords!

So apart from the staggering singles We Love You and Let's Spend The Night Together/Ruby Tuesday 1967 is considered by rock critics to be when the Stones lost the plot.

Not for my ears though - for me this song and most of Between The Buttons and Satanic Majesty's were bold experiments in trying to find an original sound which resonated with the general public. That didn't happen until Beggar's Banquet when they ascended to rock's Mount Olympus but Yesterday's Papers was a groovy adventure on the way. Love it.

This edition of the Stones’ output from 1967 earns points for creativity, but it’s not especially successful, IMO. Brian’s marimbas almost keep me from tossing it in the recycling bin.

I guess this song is not the first one that comes to my mind if someone asks me to mention
a favorite song, but I think there's a couple of things to enjoy on this track.
I don't exactly know what creates the sound of the drums, but I think it's great.
And I really appreciate the difference between the rather monotuous chorus and the
melody of the verses. The way the song builds up from the opening chorus into the
first verse is offering some kind of relief.

I agree with Silver Dagger that this is one of those songs that were important for them,
trying to find their own musical direction.
They played it in combination with Get Off of my Cloud in a few shows in 1967 and
Chris Farlowe had a hit single with this song that came out on the very day before I was born.

I've always liked it. A catchy little tune, with some unexpected sounds.

The live versions were way heavier, and the melody sounded different. It was merged into Going Home, if memory serves.

I almost prefer an early alt take where it is without the frills and subtleties that were eventually added. Still a good song from an underrated album.

BTB maybe the worst album. But YP is great, especially version I.

Part of the evolution of the Jagger-Richards songwriting team. Catchy enough, and the arrangement is fine. But too poppy and the lyrics are just petty rather than nasty.
I have the impression that if they had put these songs aside and then recorded them again in 1969 it would have bee a powerful album.
Interesting that the previous album, Aftermath, is a lot stronger.
I guess they had been off the road for a few months and were too exhausted/stoned/losing Brian/distracted by swinging London to really focus on the music. Satanic had the same problems but was another step forward in their evolution.

It's one of a handful of tracks that makes the Between The Buttons album a somewhat interesting listening experience. Has an interesting sound, and lyrically at least it is distinctive. The repeating call and response chorus is a little more entertaining than the verses in my opinion (personal taste). I guess Jagger taking lyrical ideas straight out of his personal lifestyle. Love that title.

Yes, of course, Brian Jones' marimba probably makes the song.

Supposedly Jagger's first song written on his own, but I don't believe it...he must've written other's on his own that were actually recorded.

My theory is that Keith taught Jagger how to write a song and as time went by Jagger started doing more and more. I think Jagger always needed a partner, so that when Keith was not available he used Mick Taylor as a collaborator. Again, just a theory, this need for a collaborator (on both of their parts) has kept them together. Keith needs someone around to get him to finish the damn song (Jagger, Steve Jordan), otherwise he'd camp out in the studio forever and not release anything.

I remember Mick mentioned in a interview from '69/'70 I don't write music you have to ask Keith.........the whole BTB sound for me Keith tunes...

Like the track. It's a great album all through. Horribly, horrifyingly under-rated imo.

Great tune. The mono mix is slightly longer with an extra chorus at the end.

So beautiful song and tune on that really great and utterly lovable album. The Rolling Stones album that in a certain sense I am most fond of. (Before this thread I had only heard the album version.)

Perhaps Mick was expanding his record collection at the time, and got inspired
