Two Great Artists Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles

One of the coolest things that happened in 1971 at Bill Graham's Fillmore
West in San Francisco was the appearances by Aretha Franklin. All hip
rockers of the time "flipped" over her performances including one where
Ray Charles joined her on "Spirit in the Dark." Much loved LP by all the
leading rock stars of that time.

You might want to check it out on YouTube.

Ray, as some of you might know is a big favorite of the Stones and helped to
inspire them into recording "I'm Movin'On" circa 1964-5.

Aretha is fantastic but I've never been into Ray Charles..or James Brown...I'm not understanding the reason myself that I not like to listen to them...

It was totally unedited on the Rhino Handmade Don't Fight The Feelin' set.

Ray, Artha, Billy Preston, and King Curtis, really cut the mustard that night at the Fillmore. I think there's also another duet between Ray and Aretha on a Duke Ellington number, title forgotten, on a Rare & Unissued Aretha Franklin cd, which came out on Rhino.

What was great about Aretha at the time was that she cut an amazing secular live album at the Fillmore, but then her next live album, Amazing Grace, is possibly her best ever album.

I do have the Rare & Unissued Aretha on cd, but it's buried under some other CDs, but I cannot recall the second duet between her and Ray.

Ray's reissues appear to have dried up from Concord, which is a pity. I love Genius + Soul = Jazz, which originally came out on Impulse, and the Live at The Shrine Auditorium from 1964, but very little has come out since then. A Message From The People was also reissued, and so were the Modern Sounds In C&W (I prefer the Rhino box of country material from 1959-1986) albums, but nothing since. The downloads on iTunes didn't last too long, and appear to have been discontinued.

Two really great artists whose careers petered out somewhat after that initial burst of creativity.
Are there any musicians with long careers whose later period has not been a disappointment?
Hard to think of any.

In America, it's "selling Buicks" or "calling Ralph" or "worshiping the porcelain god".

"No Anchovies, Please"

the Aretha's Live at Filmore is great !
if I remember correctly, the LP version of Spirits in the Dark is about 8 min long with Brother Ray coming in the middle of the song.
The CD reissue has the complete track about 15 min ! greater than great

PS Billy Preston is there I think.
