longer stones setlist

I simply love the stones beyond belief.i,ve seen them 9 times.but I,m just an average guy.i don,t know if I will pay 300 or 400 dollars again to hear them do just 18 songs.i know the high prices are justified-security,crew members, lots of overhead, etc.but only 18 tunes?mick is still in terrific shape.they can start each concert with 10 songs.then mick can take his time introducing every member on stage.he could easily tell a joke about one of the current members,or tell a funny story that happened over the years with mick taylor, bobby keays, bill wyman, etc.after that, keith should come on and play the tune happy,a song that is lively and everybody loves it.then keith can make a few jokes and sing 2 more songs.this will energize jagger with close to a half hour break altogether.then 10 more songs to make it 23.and 2 more for the encore?not too much to ask,is it?that would certainly make me happy to pay the money, and I think many others also.

On the other hand: they are in their seventies. It's almost a miracle that they are still around and doing these huge concerts. We didn't expect this in 2007...

Exactly. Be thankful they still tour. They are in their 70's. How many bands that age still play?

Sit upstairs, you can still hear and be part of it

I totally understand the obligation to play all the warhorses.
Unfortunately as they drop songs for shorter sets it the album nuggets we love so much and keep us coming back for more that get droppe. An extra 4 or 5 surprises is more than enough to satisfy us repeat attendees. It was the only disappointment I took away from the 14 on fire tour, especially since in 2013 they really mixed it up for the USA with much longer sets.
This South America tour has had the most conservative and shortest set lists that I can remember. It's the first time EVER that I haven't felt like I was missing out on anything.
Still, I'm so happy they're touring and playing to such a high standard in 2016!

They play long versions of warhorses, that's the reason for the 18 songs setlist.
It's more easy to play the riff and then jam the rest of the song like they do now, 15 minutes jams of Midnight Rambler, 8 minutes of Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, etc.
In the last part of the show, the last 40-45 minutes they just play 4 or 5 songs when some bands play the double of that.
More songs is more rehearsals, too much work to do when you can play the same songs over and over again and the people don't care.

Count your blessings. When I saw them in '66 and '69, they played maybe 15 songs!

It is not how long the setlist is, it is what they do with it,
and it seems pretty good to me right now, 2-2.5 hours, jamming more and sounding great.

If ya want more songs in the setlist, then go to shows in 1997,
which sounded great too, and also 2-2.5 hours
Satisfaction
It's Only Rock'n Roll
Bitch
Let's Spend The Night Together
Rock And A Hard Place
Ruby Tuesday
Anybody Seen My Baby
19th Nervous Breakdown
Out Of Control
Under My Thumb
Miss You
All About You
I Wanna Hold You
Little Queenie
Let It Bleed
The Last Time
Sympathy For The Devil
Tumbling Dice
HonkyTonk Women
You Got Me Rocking
Start Me Up
Jumping Jack Flash
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Brown Sugar

The set is just as long now, as when they played 19 or 20 songs, isn't it?

....maybe they could widen it a lil too ...

Yes Sir, even the same as when they played 24 songs, according to the experts anyway...

Soldier Field Chicago Sept. 23 1997
The whole set took 2 hours and 15 minutes. 24 songs

Foro Sol Mexico City, Mexico Thursday March 17, 2016
Show start : 9:09pm
Show end : 11:15pm
18 songs

... but still... it could be taller... and wider... and possibly deeper.

Re: longer stones setlist

It is time to ditch songs like Miss You and even Rambler. Could easily swap those two songs and replace with four.

Even YCAGWYW ..easily a two for one

Open with a shorter version of Satisfaction......finish with Street Fightin Man

Bring back the B Stage .

They could easily do 24 songs in the same time frame

I mean SFTD two for one....

The list goes on and on.

Come on Mick you have way too many songs not being played...way too many

15 minutes of Midnight Rambler
10 minutes of SFTD
10 minutes of Miss You
10 minutes of YCAGWYW
8 minutes of Gimme Shelter, Brown Sugar and Satisfaction

They play 6-7 songs on 1:10 hour, the Stones are like the Greateful Dead or Zeppellin on the 70's with few songs and endless jams.

You have a concept for a whole tour here : they could play 1 minute of each song. Therefore they could play 90 to 100 tunes within a single gig.

What a great idea for a "farewell thee" tour. smoking smiley

Mick in 2019 : "And now for the next 18 minutes we're going to play... Exile On Main St.!! You ready Keef?"

If McCartney can play 34 songs and he is the same age as the Stones, why the REALLY short set list? I don't accept the rational that the songs are longer so they can get away with player fewer tunes. I know it is a fact, I just don't like it! I agree with whoever said they feel like they're not missing anything by not going.
I am dying to go to see them again...my last show was in 2013. I am experiencing severe Stones withdrawal BUT I do want to hear 23 or more songs! 2 1/2 hours is long enough but variety is the spice of life! MORE TUNES PLEASE!

I like this. The Stones could do their own version of the old game show, Name That Tune, where contestants had x number of seconds to name a tune to win a prize. They could bring audience members up on stage and ask the audience member how long it would him/her to name the next tune, given the premise that the audience member could take no more than 5 or 6 seconds max to name the tune. Interactive concert going and tons of songs to be played. And, if the audience member named the tune within say 3 or 4 seconds of it being started, the whole song would then be played by the Stones with the winning audience member singing along on stage with the band as the prize. This could keep the Stones touring for another few years under the heading, "Soon, coming to a town near you...win a chance to sing on stage with the Stones".

Yes, I know, I am being very bad in mocking the Stones, but, you gotta admit, this would be an interesting thing for the Stones or any band to do.

Some of the gigs in 1975 and 1976 was only 18 songs long!

OT - AC/DC have been playing a setlist with 19-20 songs since 1980, songs like You Shook Me All Night Long was not played live until around 1985/86.

I'm just listening at Buenos Aires second show boot:

Midnight Rambler (17:00)
Miss You (9:36)
Gimme Shelter (7:42)
SFTD (7:49)
Brown Sugar (8:42)
YCAGWYW (8:34)
Satisfaction (8:35)

7 songs on 1 hour and 8 minutes.

And on Buenos Aires last show (Feb 13) the last 8 songs clock in at 1 hour, 17 minutes with a 11 minutes version of Satisfaction (a 3:45 original song).

They could release an album called
"Rolling Stones Made in South America" and only put 7 songs on it too.

OT Response- It looks to me like YSMANLong was played 240 times between 1980- 1985.

I am satisfied,
I am downright THRILLED and delighted with the current state of affairs with my favorite band.

I think 2-2.5 hours sets and jamming some the greatest rock and roll songs ever written is SPECFKGTACULAR!

This year is the 50th anniversary of Afermath. Why don't they play the whole album (UK edition) in Arenas plus 10 warhorses. Both sets of fans the longstanding and the more occasional will love it. Other artists do it and everyone appreciates it.grinning smiley
