More punk than anything they've ever done, Some Girls included.

Pretty fun rocker this tune. Not of the quality and development of most of the Exile cuts, imo. It has some great piano and harp playing though and the energy and tempo is obviously one of the appeals here. It's down right manic.

The fact that it was recorded in LA and Sunset Sound is probably one of the reasons Wyman isn't on the track. He probably wasn't there. I imagine this one didn't require a lot of studio time, probably conceived, cut and finished in a day or less.

Hard to tell if the embryo came from the guitar or the piano here.I get the feeling it was Nicky jamming around and Keith picked up on it and went from there.

What continues to blow me away with EOMS including Turd on the Run is the great cool lyrics which are so steeped in the bowels of Rhythm and blues. I don't care if EOMS isn't the best album they released, for me it's absolutely the nastiest filthiest in the best way possible!!!

Great music with very organic lyrics. It's about ALO, isn't it -
the extent of the damage he'd done by bringing in Allen Klein had just recently sunk in.
Lost a lot of love indeed

Well thank you, here is an example of someone giving their view on lyrics and making it BETTER,
cause I have always hated the word 'Turd'
but when hearing it's possible ALO/ or whoever involved of rip off/ gettin' off with their $,
I think: Turd (a person, rat fink person) = now okay(clicked)

Ran thru Exile today outside in incredible annual weather/ foliage the hills of N. CA, thinking if I called
Turd On The Run blues, it's crispy fried chicken,
and whatever magic fungi from the basement at Nellcote that seeped into the guys
pores, there was enough intake to shake off the final in LA. It was a solid run thru to finish.
And the piano (I thought) God the piano playing.

Part of the charm for me is the seemingly ramshackle-haphazard -give it all you got- hit the record button and be done with it approach.
Absolute perfection with added bells and whistles is unnecessary - it just rolls steadily along as if it has a life of it's own...warts and all.

Wish they would revisit this recording method again, similar to what Keith did for some of Crosseyed Heart. cool smiley

The least satisfying, yet simultaneously an absolutely ESSENTIAL component of Exile. RAMSHACKLE perfection, that probably took them forever to get to sound so totally off the cuff! Love it.

Sorry Exile lovers, but this one just doesn't wet my whistle. It's frantic and yet flat, repetitive and one-dimensional. And what's up with that lame-ass drum sound?

Next!

It's about as close to unselfconscious as we ever get to hear from Mick vocally, which is what I love above all else. In which his vocals are almost as unsculpted and therefore perfect as his harp playing. Love Keith's joyous defiant harmonies. This video (aside from the subtitles) to me feels very much like this song. A thrilling somewhat harrowing no holds-barred adrenaline-fueled joyride. An accident narrowly averted. A rebel yell.

Turd on the Run - with great visuals

The guitar IS this tune. All the other stuff is spice, gravy, icing on the cake – you name it. Still, you can't take away a piece of the jig saw puzzle, It won't work.

I just love the single strike Keith misses in there. It just adds to the brilliance of the track. A mean rhythm guitar. And what a sound!

Do you give a song a title as "Turd on The run ', it should be made clear that even the composer thinks it's a shiny clear filler...grinning smiley

Just been listening to it again and in keeping with the great road journey into the heart of Americana that is Exile I reckon this song strays up the hills into hillbilly/ Appalachian country.

The tempo is perfect for some of that crazy guitar and fidddle mountain music. I can even imagine Hank Williams liking this one.

Yee and indeed ha!

'Turd on the Run', as many have noted above, on it's own it's a good track; as part of EOMS it's indispensable. It simply has that loose ramshackle groove that countless other acts could spend careers' trying to perfect.

It is tracks like Turd, Casino Boogie, Ventilator Blues, I just wanna see his face, that on their own may not make as much sense, but as part of that scintillating rhythm and blues collective known as Exile, make perfect sense.

If there is ever to be an updated remake of the movie Deliverance, this would be perfect for part of soundtrack.
During the scene near the beginning when they pull into the gas station with the hillbilly's dancing.
And then an updated Dueling Banjo's...maybe call it Dueling Guitars featuring Ronnie and Mick Taylor going at it. winking smiley
Then again, I don't like any movie remakes so....

I think the best way to think of this piece is "atmospheric" Sure, taken on its own, it's not one of their great songs. But in its particular position on the Exile album, it's a perfect piece for setting tone, feeling, and stage setting for what comes next.

its a fantastic song but like so many other great songs the stones made, they also made it unradio friendly which in my opinion has held the stones back a lot. i love the stones, have since 1987 but what i hate about them is the fact they have to be so vulgar at times, its not clever, it does them no favours and actually makes them appear backward at times. the stones were and still are a very clever band when they put thier minds to it, but creating great songs and making it unreleasable as a single is stupid and possibly one reason the beatles have outsold them.

Whats vulgar in one country is fully acceptable in another...

There's nothing vulgar about this track as far as I am concerned.

I don't think that a song named "een drol op de vlucht" would have a lot of chance in the Netherlands either.

Precisely. It's just basic street humour. What's wrong with that? If you want to reference vulgarity then check out Casino Boogie. It's just a kiss away. >grinning smiley<

Usually a Stones-song starts playing in my head only by reading the title. This time the player in my head remained silent. That happens very very rarely.

After listening to the CD I know why: The song is totally uninteresting, I wouldnt say it is crap, but then again not far from it... A "filler´s filler" at best. Musically almost absolutely nothing is happening here, all the same from start to finsih... Must have took half a minute to "compose" it.

One of their most forgettale songs on one of their most overrated albums, imo. (Exile is an album half filled with demo-recordings of subpar songs, that shouldnt be on any Stones-album)

What other songs do you reckon are 'subpar' on Exile then HMS?

Shake Your Hips
Casino Boogie
Sweet Black Angel
Ventilator Blues
I Just Want To See His Face
Tumbling Dice
Turd On The Run

Incredulous, huh, Silver Dagger? The person that says "Any track on Dirty Work and/or Undercover is better by far." thinks Tumbling Dice, Casino Boogie, Ventilator and Turd are "subpar". I love me some UNDERCOVER but it's not that good.

Be wary heading down that dark ally off Exile Street. Manhole covers burbling and steaming, shooting percussion onto the humid night air. Yet you can't help following a sweet black angel into the shadows. Turd on the Run. A barrel house blues steamer. A rollicking back beat harmonizing with Keith's un-relentless rhythm guitar, snarls and snaps like a bayou gator. Mick, oh Mick, and his harmonica, a bayou saxophone, a blues licking stick, ticking and toking like fire from a blues exhaust fan. This song is a crucial scene steeler. A heady rich ingredient in Exile's depraved atmosphere. Like so much of Exile, Turd on the Run is part of a side show family of bourbon brawlers and loose women. Let it loose, all down the line, till I realize I'm just a Turd on the Run. Snap!
