Any and all Charlie Parker recordings from the Royal Roost. Here's just one -- Ko-Ko, with Miles Davis and Max Roach (et al.) -- sublime!

And if you have 30 seconds check this out -- rare footage Charlie Parker laughing at Coleman Hawkins as Hawkins attempts to mime to his own playing for a film. Oh my damn, that's funny!

I am quite obnoxiously particular about my jazz. I just cannot tolerate a lot of what many consider to be the great traditional jazz records. For example, I much prefer Miles' electric groove period ('68-'71-ish) to 'Kind of Blue,' which I find to be very plain. I love the late 60's and early 70's grooves that Horace Silver, Grant Green, Cannonball Adderly, and others were playing; Grant Green's excellent live albums from this period are great examples. Beyond that, I like very daring and experimental jazz minus the exhibitionist skronking that comes with a lot of modern jazz... I cannot tolerate 8+ minutes of chaotic noise coming from brilliant musicians' instruments. The jazz I like, I REALLY like, but holy Christ, make me listen to "smooth jazz" saxophone solos and I will behave like an overgrown toddler who has just had his lollypop stolen and replaced with a turnip. Perhaps I was dragged through the lingerie section of Montgomery Ward too many times as a child, but department store jazz makes me absolutely furious.

"Jazz" is a music type which I like only 'Live in Concert'. I remember, I've seen really great jazz concerts from artists like Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the late Oscar Peterson, David Sanborn, Terence Blanchard and some others. And I've seen also a terrible concert by Pat Metheny, in which I must fled from the concert venue, because I couldn't hear it any longer.

Thanks for putting that track up treaclefingers.

I always listen to a lot of jazz at this time of year, particularly on the way to work and back.It gets rid of the winter blues. It's like you step off the stresses of the planet for a while.

Currently listening to some British traditional jazz.Monty Sunshine's "Wise guy" a great carefree and laid back number.

Since it's that time of the year, let's pop this one by Mister Armstrong:

Oh, Xmas Eve in New Orleans one year. Ate at the city's oldest restaurant at that time, Tujacques. Exquisite meal. They comped us bread pudding with bourbon sauce for dessert. Told us it was a New Orelans traditional dish for Xmas. Wow! Had never had bread pudding before in my life, but I sure learned to make it and the bourbon sauce (dark rum sauce ain't bad as an alternative) after eating it at Tujacques. Give it a go yourselves as a holiday treat.

Here's another Armstrong Xmas classic:

Nice to see some love here for jazz, Charlie would be proud. My childhood household always had Ella Fitzgerald playing during parties and now this music has been passed down to a 3rd generation.

Hey, all you cool kats and kitties. Am listening to a guitar player from back in the day I'd forgotten. Check out Gabor Szabo on utoob. Some very good music, but y'all gonna have to pick through his stuff to separate the wheat from the chaff. Here's a link to the first album by him that turned me on:

Check out Jazz Raga and The Sorcerer for another taste of his playing.
