"Highwire" is the saddest, IMO because it kicked off the "stones by numbers" era in full force.

Highwire is one of their best songs ever. Back then I used to play it to death and still love to listen to it. One of their best post-DW-efforts.

Ruby Tuesday is rather sad, I guess. Sittin On A Fence too. They did quite a lot sad songs in the mid 60s.

It was mentioned on page one, and I'd agree it pulls at the strings of the heart.
I'd also add Wild Horses - filled with melancholy both lyrically and musically.

"Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die..."

All About You
No Use In Crying
Almost Hear You Sigh
Slipping Away
Out Of Tears
The Worst
Streets Of Love {I still don't understand the hatred for this, Mick is brilliant on this one in my opinion and when played live in Rome in 2014 it totally soared}

If you played it to death when it came out, then it must be good. I've changed my opinion of it accordingly.

Certainly has elements of sad in there but I think the overall "if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need" makes it more happy and hopeful overall. But this one uses elements of sad/happy like a form of suspense and release.

Wild Horses (first mentioned in this thread by Naturalust) and Memeory Motel (first mentioned by Green Lady) are the two saddest numbers in the Stones catalogue.

.....

Olly.

I have to admit that this is the only Stones song that made me cry once or twice.

What about Blue Turns To Grey??? I knew the song already, but since I saw the 25x5 documentary, where they used BTTG as the background tune on Brian's funeral images, this song made me feel real sad.

I'm going to add Ruby Tuesday to my list. That one pushes the sad button for me. Might be one of their saddest actually.

Good call. I think I agree, Naturalust. Written during what was possibly Keith's saddest time, up to that point in his life. There's such ambivalence and grace in that song. (Incidentally, in that respect, sort of like Ray Davies' "Days" ).

Agreed. I immediately thought of Sad Day and then Ruby Tuesday.
One of the things Ruby Tuesday has is that same bittersweet thing Ticket To Ride by this boards enemy has - it's a sad happy piece of music that manages to feel and sound really happy and uplifting while at the same time being a complete downer.Brian Wilson was really good at that kind of thing too.

"No Use In Crying" is bitterly resolute, to me, rather than sad. I've always thought this is Keith for Anita when he finally had had enough.

"YCAGWYW," to me, generally reflects exhaustion and discouragement, and the refrain sort of a scolding.

From Tattoo You "Worried About You" is the saddest song.

I'd like to start a subthread within this thread, called MAUDLIN Rolling Stones songs.

Here are a couple to get the ball rolling:

Already Over Me
Always Suffering

I think they may be the same song, it's been a long time since I've listened to either.

I've never heard them. Doesn't seem like I'm missing anything. They sound like late-era lugubrious Mick songs?

Agreed...is there such a thing as a great sad song? I vote for Ruby Tuesday.
