Sad Rolling Stones Songs

Probably a few more than I can think of but I realize I like them all. I was trying to figure out why I like Let It Loose so well and realized the sadness is one of the reasons. Any reason to give Mick to sing with some uncharacteristic emotion...or something. Anyway when was the last one? And the first one?

Anyway here's my short list in no particular order:

Let It Loose
Angie
Wild Horses
I Got The Blues
Coming Down Again
Sister Morphine

Sad Day is pretty sad.

Actually, Streets of Love is pretty sad, but that has more to do with the writing, performance & recording quality.

With that music? It's like a parody of sad, imo. Perhaps Mick's first true parody.

I agree about Streets of Love, forgot about that one. But something about Micks careful pronunciations and annunciations seem to make it insincere...or something.

Forgot about the insincerity of SOL...that's pretty sad too.

With respect to earliest sad, I think that has to be As Tears Go By, no?

"Highwire" is the saddest, IMO because it kicked off the "stones by numbers" era in full force.

Much of GHS is sad...maybe the better word is pensive?

the best are the sad songs with political content, like your list of 6.

Yeah that is definitely sad, nice call. You can hear Mick trying to be sensitive with this one, actually pretty successful...until the choruses come along then there is a bit of a disconnect.

I'm going to add Ruby Tuesday to my list. That one pushes the sad button for me. Might be one of their saddest actually.

It's sad but it isn't like she died or lied to him, she just needed to be free. Now the woman in "dear
Doctor" on the other hand....

Good call. I think I agree, Naturalust. Written during what was possibly Keith's saddest time, up to that point in his life. There's such ambivalence and grace in that song. (Incidentally, in that respect, sort of like Ray Davies' "Days" ).

Damn Rockee, leave it to you to pull one of the blue. Never new that one existed. Probably a good one to add the alt-country thread, and the modulating keys thread too (although very short ones and arguable). Nice!
