Alternate versions
Posted by: VideoJames ()

I was wondering how many alternate versions of songs are around. Not songs with a just a different mix or a song that runs 5- 10 seconds longer. But different like
Beast of Burden and the Beast Of Burden with the falsetto vocal, As Tears Go By & As Time Goes By or Mercy,Mercy and the"up Tempo" alternate take of Mercy, Mercy, All Down The Line and the Acoustic version of All Down The Line, All Sold Out & the alternate version All Part of The Act, It's All Over Now and the 1967 version of It's All Over Now, Everybody Needs Somebody to Love US & UK versions..Basically either songs with different noticeable vocals or noticeable instrumental version. Here I listed a few but I know I missed a lot. H.T.W. & Country Honk are another example.

The best version, which could be their best song ever resides on Flowers.

I assume you're talking official releases.

I read there's an alternate version of Almost Hear You Sigh which I've never heard but would love to.

The bluesy version of 19th Nervous Breakdown from Toronto 2005.

The electric Sweet Black Angel from Fort Worth 1972.

The 1975/76 You Gotta Move versions.

GOOMC in 1975/76.

UMT has went through some different phases and shapes.

I've heard that, and after googling it looks like the 12" single I'd read of is more an EP on which the ALMOST HEAR is no different than the album.

Officially... yeah, sure, there aren't any except for regional edits/remixes regarding alternate versions. Actual alternate versions? All that's been officially released - Good Time Women, Loving Cup and Soul Survivor.

I am going to make a proposal for a special "From the Vaults" CD with an Alternate versions of studio tracks. Hopefully it can be a double CD box set. So what I am looking for is as many {Studio tracks} as can be found. I would like to see what are the most popular ones fans want to hear. Looking for mostly legally released tracks and then an alternate track that has yet to be legally released.
But also(plan cool smiley ones both legally released for example "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" U.S. & U.K. versions.

B.T.W... For those interested... I have received a positive response for my "1972 Lost Live Album" proposal. They are now looking into possibly putting it out (still have a way to go) but at least I did not get a "Thank you; but NO THANKS". So it looks promising.

Re: Alternate versions

Time Is On My Side: the regular version and the organ version on 12x5.

Poison Ivy: The "pop" and "harder rocking-version".

Dance: part I and Ii.

My two favorites are:

Time is on my side...........very different second version
Poison Ivy....same for this one, completely different second version

Very often one Chess-recording and one for Decca in London...

Everybody needs somebody has also 2 great versions if I remember right...

2 1 2 0

Impossible to make such a list, too many if you count the unreleased versions.
And I'd personnaly prefer to hear never heard before alternate versions than long time bootleged ones.
The alternate All Down The Line, Bitch or CYHMK were good surprises and nobody on this board asked for them as nobody knew their existence!

Hang Fire (with different lyrics)
When The Whip Comes Down (long version)
Respectable (long version)

etc.

What's the 1967 version of It's All Over Now. From their European tour or a studio re-make?
There's all those amazing sounding instrumental verions from Between The Buttons like Yesterday's Papers.

There are extremely many of them.
Are we talking official releases only?
Alternate mixes?
Alternate recordings?

Going for different official alternate STUDIO RECORDINGS only, narrows the scope. The following list consists of different recordings, by The Stones, which means that there are no alternate mixes, even if the mixes includes different overdubs such as different vocal takes etc. The basic track are still the same.

I Want To Be Loved (demo version)
I Want To Be Loved (single version)
Poison Ivy (early single version)
Poison Ivy (E.P. version)
Tell Me (You're Coming Back) (early take)
Time Is On My Side ('Organ' version)
Time Is On My Side ('Guitar' version)
Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (UK version)
Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (US version)
Honky Tonk Women / Country Honk
Loving Cup (1969 version)
Good Time Women (alternate 'Tumbling Dice')
All Down The Line (alternate take)
Brown Sugar (Clapton version)
Can't You Hear Me Knocking (alternate take)
Bitch (alternate take)
Dead Flowers (alternate take)

James, don´t forget to mention the Wild Horses/Brown Sugar
versions from Hot Rocks (Shelley matrix). That would be cool!
And the complete Slave (> 10 Min.) must be in the vaults somewhere.

One of my favorites is the promo video version of Jumpin' Jack Flash from '68. It runs about 40 seconds longer (if memory serves) and has extra guitar parts. It's on the DVD that comes with the OOP singles box. I keep meaning to load it onto my computer and convert it to an audio file.

Brown Sugar with the Taylor solo and different guitar parts. Living in the Heart of Love (Luxury). Shine a Light.

Why not throw in some unreleased songs like Trident Jam and Traveling Man too?
