Somehow, considered an underdog, "Flowers" sneaks into the top five.

Strictly regarding my preference vs the classic Big 4 etc critically lauded pre-UNDERCOVER (as in, nothing post TATTOO YOU that has been called as good as EXILE blah blah blah)...

1. Tattoo You
2. Goats Head Soup
3. Undercover
4. Let It Bleed
5. Sticky Fingers

1. Aftermath

2. Out of our heads

3- No.1

4 Let it bleed

5 No.2

I can see how it can be a discussion.

But a debate? On albums that one likes vs what the critically heralded albums are? That's no debate.

The only debate that could be with the Big 4 etc is which one should be ranked first.

Well, we can always debate why Exile is out of our top 5 lists...

Forgive me if this topic or one similar already exists.

eye rolling smiley

Hell for Stones fans is a room where folks must discuss the constituent albums and their respective ranking of the top 4-5 albums.

We never seem to discuss albums 6-12. Perhaps we should focus there for a bit in the spirit of triage? In this model there are three groups of albums:

Those who are likely to live on, regardless of what care they receive (like the top 5)
Those who are likely to die out, regardless of what care they receive (the Dirty Works of the discography)
Those for which immediate attention might make a positive difference in outcome of the band's and the album's cultural significance.

For me, in this last category I would include

Black and Blue
It's Only Rock n' Roll
Emotional Rescue
Undercover
Tattoo You, and
Goat Heads Soup

All of these in their own way are minor masterpieces that don't quite measure up to the top 5, but are at the same time integral to informing the musical legacy of the band.

I had trouble with the #5 spot on my list.
Really wanted more Brian, but had to squeeze in Tattoo You because of the impact it had on me when released (first time seeing the Stones, etc.)
Figured Brian's slide on No Expectations from Beggars would fill any void.

But as someone mentioned - that's my list "for now".

I think i've analysed it too much, I need a rest from it, thinking the same for Aftermath, Between The Buttons and Their Satanic Majesties too.

I've been grooving to early singles, EP's and their first 3 UK albums the most lately, just listening, not getting hung up on who played what and what gear was used etc.

thumbs up

One can easily make a superb Exile-album by programming his CD-player. The original is simply too long and has too much average music to call it a masterpiece. Totally overrated, just like Some Girls.

One can also create very good post-Dirty-Work-albums by excluding tracks and add occasionally single-b-sides. To do so, makes Steel Wheels, VL, Bridges and ABB very good, almost great albums.

Cool down, GasLightStreet, Dirty Work is only their sixth-best albumcool smiley. But if you take away their great ones from 1962-72, DW would be outstanding, maybe even top any top-5-ranking.

Dirty Work is inferior to all the albums the stones made with Brian jones in the band.
