Rod Stewart wants Ronnie to join him in Jeff Beck Group reunion

If this happens I'll be first in the queue for tickets. From New Magazine.

Rocker ROD STEWART wants to reform THE JEFF BECK GROUP for a double-bill concert featuring his other band, FACES.

The Maggie May hitmaker got his big break in Beck's 1960s group alongside guitarist Ronnie Wood, but they both quit in 1969 to join The Small Faces as they rebranded themselves following frontman Steve Marriott's departure.

Faces reunited in 2011 but Stewart was unable to join them, and he finally got back with his former bandmates for a gig at a charity concert earlier this month (Sep15).

Following the performance, Stewart admitted he is keen for more Faces shows, and now he has revealed he pitched an idea to Wood to also reform The Jeff Beck Group for a series of super-gigs.

Stewart tells Uncut magazine, "I put this to Ronnie and Ronnie thought it was a great idea. I said, 'There's just three of us left. We could have a Faces and a Jeff Beck reunion all on one bill. And you and me are in both bands.'

"We do three-quarters of an hour with Jeff, interval, three-quarters of an hour we do the Faces. What a brilliant time we'd all have. Ronnie'd love to do it, because he can play bass with Jeff."

Can you imagine - Ronnie on bass and Rod belting out Let Me Love You. I can't really see Jeff not wanting to do this as a fun excursion. Jeff has mellowed recently and if there's some decent money to be made I can see them all going for it - apparently as support to The Faces. So double work for Rod and Ronnie.

The only problem would be, when...

Stones are touring from Feb 3 till march 21. They have a month of, go into the studio.

Hopefully they will do an European Stones leg of the tour.

So, maybe in the fall of next year.

45 Minutes Jeff Beck Group
45 Minutes Faces
120 Minutes Stones

THAT would be a "Super-Gig" and probably Ronnie's Dream Come True.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Anything that gets Jeff Beck out there in front of more audiences is a good thing. However, I'm not sure Jeff will go for this, not only does Rod insinuate that The Jeff Beck Group would always be opening for the Faces, which may be Ok, it kind of degrades the whole value of Jeff's role in the thing. Jeff would be the most exciting musician in the whole affair, imo and as much as I like the Faces would probably blow them off the stage every night. lol

And with Jeff these days, he has become almost the exact opposite kind of musician that Ronnie Wood is. Has even outright said as much, talked about how he loves Ronnie a lot but approaches music in a completely different way. I'd be surprised if Jeff would thrive or be happy in a band with Ronnie Wood playing bass. I may be wrong and would actually love to see Ronnie step up his game to try to play more at the level of the great bass players Jeff is used to working with but at this point I can't really imagine that happening.

Rod floated that idea a couple of year ago.

Jeff Beck's take at the time:

"He doesn't sound the same. The timbre of his voice has changed, and therefore there's no point in trying to do 'Truth 2' or anything like that," Beck explains. "He should've called me 25 years ago for that, or when I did 'People Get Ready' with him (in 1985) would've been a good time. But his manager didn't want that. I don't think he wants to lose his boy back into my evil clutches, so that never happened."

Beck says he and Stewart have not been able to connect for something in more recent years and advises that his former bandmate "has got to focus. I've already done 11 demos for (Stewart), and he said they were in the wrong key. So there's the commitment; he didn't even tell me which key to do these tracks. But I don't want these sour grapes. He prefers (soccer), and maybe that's the problem. I'm not holding my breath."

Rod did join Jeff onstage at one of the L.A. El Rey shows back in 2009.

"Stewart surprised Beck last night when he appeared onstage with a microphone in hand,
singing on covers of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Willie Dixon's "I Ain't Superstitious,"
which Beck and Stewart recorded together in 1967 for the Jeff Beck Group's Truth".

Beck Stewart

I was at one of those shows - either the night before or night after (no Rod) - , and the special guests were Joss Stone (nice enough) and John Mayer (unnecessary). eye rolling smiley

After reading what bye bye johnny wrote, not so sure a full on reunion will ever happen though.
And another quote from the same RS article from 2009 linked above:

'Last year, Rolling Stone spoke to Beck about the prospect of the Jeff Beck Group possibly reuniting, and at the time Beck seemed pessimistic.
"Reformation of bands is never my idea of a good idea. Leave well enough alone, especially 35 years after it happened,"
Beck told RS. "It would be fun if we did it in private to see if it would sound any good, but leave it well enough alone
and remember it for being groundbreaking at the time."

It's like the Kinks reunion, or the idea that Jimmy Page is someday going to get off his ass and do something. They'll be babbling incoherently about it on their deathbeds.

It's sad, but Rod is the weak link in all of this. Ronnie and Jeff Beck are still sharp. Rod lost his rock and roll voice years ago. Neither of them need Rod any longer.

agreed, rod's voice is over

really only Mick has kept his range together of the singers of that era and scene

I must say those songs sounded phenomenal with Jimmy Hall singing on the Beck/ZZ Top tour last summer.

Yes ! Ali Mackenzie would be a great replacement for Rod .

Unfortunately his name may not be too familiar to many Faces and Jeff Beck Group fans as it is to many of us.

I may be completely wrong.

How had this come about ? Has another "fly in the ointment" passed ? I'd rather have Mick Hucknall singing...and Jeff "fret w*nking" Beck....No Thanks.

Some good quotes from Jeff concerning Rod and The Jeff Beck Group on the great Dean Goodman site.
