Stones Songs Unjustly Praised/Villified by IORRians

Kind of similar to overrated/underrated, I'll admit. There are the usual suspects like Streets of Love or Indian Girl, where I see some reasoning is involved, even if I disagree, but sometimes the musical tastes within the Stones canon by the folks here leave me scratching my head. I'll confine myself to songs done by the current band lineup (Black and Blue to now) to minimize "personnel selection bias".

Shamed for no good reason:

Fool to Cry
Lies
Hot Stuff
Infamy
Shattered
Brand New Car
Hang Fire
She Saw Me Coming

Inexplicably Put on a Pedestal:

Terrifying
Harlem Shuffle
Sex Drive
This Place is Empty
Rain Fall Down
Laugh, I Nearly Died

I agree about the shamed ones. However, I think I'm one of the very few here who loves Terrifying smiling smiley

And what's not to like with This Place Is Empty?

re: This Place Is Empty, I remember being disappointed at first listen (another slow one by Keith...) but it has grown on me, as has everything else. Blinded by Love should replace Terrifying on that list, but I don't think I've seen anyone admit they like it.

Thank you! I love Fool to Cry.

OTOH, I kinda like Rain Fall Down, for the video and its chorus for a ringtone, in particular. cool smiley

Bill Wyman was on a lot of these songs and is not in the current line up.

I have said it many times:
"Streets Of Love" is a fine song and a standout track.
It's pop and it's sleazy, but so what? The Stones have never relied too much on a certain style and those who prefer them playing c***-rock-riff songs all the time, are simply trying to put them in a certain box of style. One of the reasons The Stones are better than most, is because they a great songwriters and "Streets Of Love" is a fine fully developed composition. Those who witnessed the song on the 2005-07 tour, knows that it had tremendous effect on audiences.

It was indeed very good live.

The very high up in the mix-vocals on the studio version + Mick's mannered singing must take a lot of the blame for the reception of the song, imo. It just isn't THAT bad.

Maybe the lyrics are a bit awkward in places, but so what... smiling smiley

Only because of tayloresque noodling....

At least Infamy is shamed for good reason, imo. Very uninteresting, very uninspired Keith-song.

I often scratch my head reading comments on certain songs... but it´s all a matter of personal taste in the end... Others maybe scratch their heads when reading my posts, especially when it´s about the glorious Dirty Work album...

I always liked "Sweethearts Together", which seems to get substantially trashed on this board. Mick & Keith singing together, the great Flaco Jimenez on accordion, and some killer doo-wop b/g vox. Pleasant throwback-type tune, something a little different.

Very cheesy song. But most of all, it´s so boooooooring.

I like Indian Girl, and people always use it as an exemplar of a bad Stones song on here.

I would add Angie to the shamed for no good reason list. Sure it was a pop song with some questionable production but those acoustic guitars are great, the lyrics very good and the song overall fantastic. If it was produced more in the spirit of Sister Morphine, which it easily could have been, I think less people would vilify this one.

To the unjustly praised i'd put in Fingerprint File and When The Whip Comes Down. Two of the very rare instances of myself not appreciating Stones songs.

Rock and a hard place generally gets a justified bad rap from any serious fan, bland and boring.

amazing how peoples opinions on certain rolling stones songs can be poles apart.

the stones made such diverse music that there is plenty for everybody to enjoy, even if we all have different musical tastes.

You can put me on the bandwagon with those who love sweethearts together and angie. What about neighbors? I didn't like it when I first heard it, but it's grown on me some..well, a little. It's mostly loved here, isn't it?

I've seen 'Can't Be Seen' praised on this site more than I would have expected.

In the ubiquitous setlist discussions, several posters have suggested they would like 'Rock And A Hard Place' to feature in place of more frequently played songs...

...Why?

.....

Too Much Blood is the only weak spot on Undercover, but I can live with it. Aaaah... Undercover, what a great album!
