When I Call Your Name - LICKS SESSIONS, Paris 2002
Posted by: RipThisBone ()
Date: August 3, 2015 00:13

A few months ago there was a thread on IORR where the 2002 "Licks Sessions" in Paris came into focus.
Two NEW titles were put on the table regarding this subject by TeddyB1018 at the time:
JUST BECAUSE (a country-tinged rocker) and WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME (old style R&B number).

JUST BECAUSE (Licks Outtake 2002) turned into TROUBLE (KR single 2015).

Can we add WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME to the Paris 2002 "Licks Sessions"?

Well, yes, you can, because they were. I guess for Zentgraf or whoever you posted it's unconfirmed. And I wouldn't suggest as above that Steve Jordan necessarily had anything to do with the original, more "country tinged" (to quote myself) 2002 version of Just Because.

Hi Teddy, do you remember something about the song called "Smooth 180"?
In Chuck Leavell's book ("Between a Rock and a Home Place") he mentions a song Keith recorded during the Licks sessions called "Smooth 180. Chuck said it was a fun track and that he hopes it will be released one day.

Doesn't look like it made it to "Crosseyed Heart", unless the name got changed.

The "Still in Love" info probably came from a screenshot in "4 Flicks" : [www.iorr.org]

These sessions do fascinate me somewhat. I cannot help but wonder what else they toyed with during the Doom and Gloom/One More Shot recording period.

No, I didn't hear a song called Smooth 180. My friend has only nine or ten tracks, including a couple that they finished and released.

Pretty sure Teddy is talking about "Don't Stop" and "Keys To Your Love." These are not the released versions, but ones tried with Danny Saber. Teddy will correct if my memory is faulty.

Incidentally, "Still in Love" has been around for a great number of years with common bootlegged versions (instrumental or with off-mike guide vocal) from a number of album sessions over the years.

Ah ok, I thought he meant stuff they hadn't used for Licks.

Yes, Nico lists this version as SIL VI, going from memory I have:

SIL I : ER sessions, short (around 1'30) with vocal, aka "Sugar Babe"
SIL II : Keith 1981 Sessions, not sure I've heard that one
SIL III : UC sessions, instrumental, "piano version"
SIL IV : another instrumental from the UC sessions, "guitar version"
SIL V : UC or DW sessions, long (around 7') with off-mike vocals, aka "Ralph's Tune" (first appeared on a Keith boot)
SIL VI : Licks sessions

Thanks for the information on the Paris 2002 sessions. Can you maybe tell us the track names of the unreleased tracks?

Do you have any information when and where the Danny Saber sessions took place? Was it in early 2002?

Rocky's got it exectly right on the two titles tried with Danny Saber. Not markedly different from the final versions though.

Well, he's most unfortunately passed away about two and a half years ago, having been friendly with Mick, Keith, Ron, Pierre, Steve Bing and others, including Danny Saber, but I think I do have a list of titles somewhere I can dig up. I still have my own friendly contacts among the Stones and their posse, but admittedly miss his access, as well as our personal and professional relationship. Still pretty tight with the KR team.

These were on the tape my late Manager had from the '02 sessions:

Just Because
Dreams
Cried Out
Because? (a second take of Just Because)
Love is a Test
When I Call Your Name
U Don't Wanna
Don't Stop
Keys to Your Love

These are all MJ lead guide vocals.

Isn't there a snippet of "You Better Leave That Man Alone" in FOUR FLICKS? No, I don't mean "Extreme Western Grip" or "Well, Well." I believe it's in the documentary and the title (if it's the title) is the only portion we hear Mick sing. I could be mistaken.

Maybe some are working titles for songs later finished. Who knows?

On the copy I have the first song is called Just Before, not Just Because. U Don't Wanna sounds like it might be an early take of Driving Too Fast...Cried Out sounds like possibly an early take of, Laugh, I Nearly Died to me.

Both, Just Before is the all music part of Because, most of Because is the band deciding what key and beat and everything to play the song in, real "fly on the wall" stuff!
