These were my bands growing up in 70's.

Ray is the best songwriter. Stones the best stage act.

The catalogs are closer than most think.

Dave Davies is a better guitarist than Keith and Ronnie. (Not MT though)

Stones rock harder through the years. ( A kinks late 80's arena show was a rocking ton of fun)

Kinks are more artsy.

No one can outlast the Stones (a real part of their legacy).

Tattoo You is a better album on the basis of the anthem "Start Me Up".

Thats the correct answer.

Its obviously the Stones, but The Kinks are far closer to the Stones greatness than many think. They didn't have a bad album for like a decade, and they were putting out like two records a year at that point. Its pointless to compare the two, but The Kinks are much better and influential than people give them credit for. Luckily, people like the Stones already know that.

Dave Davies is not a better guitarist than Mick Taylor or Ronnie Wood but he's a more influential one. Neither of them wrote half of the memorable licks Davies banged out. Thats the truth. You like one band better than the other. So do I. But let's not forget about facts here. The Kinks were a force to be reckoned with that many still don't understand.

I don't know for sure how influential Dave Davies was as a guitarist or the Kinks were as a group. I think the Stones overall (with the big singles and albums like Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, EOMS, Some Girls, etc.) had a bigger impact and in 60s, 70s and beyong had more success than the kinks (if that counts for anything...if you love the Kinks than no argument).

So for me not a fair comparison. But I like what the Kinks did and they certainly I'd left their mark on rock n' roll history.

main reason: kinks are disappearing almost entirely from public consciousness, while songs like gimme shelter, satisfaction, and you can't always get what you want are now classics that the entire world knows.

say what you will about the stones, but the band and the songs have staying power.

The Kinks are long gone, the Stones are here to stay.

I don't know the Kinks that well. "Lola" is a great song. I strongly dislike "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All of the Night" and I don't know the rest.
I will check out "Give the people what they want", now.

In any case, they were more of a pop/rock band than a blues-based rock band, I thought, so wouldn't it make more sense to compare them to the Who or the Beatles?

Ever notice there aren't any photos of the Stones or one of the Stones with the Kinks or Ray Davies back in the British Invasion days? I mean, Ray Davies is the British Brian Wilson. Yet, there are photos of the Stones with just about everyone else on the planet.

They are all great and why compare them? When it comes to bands that got the short of it, The Small Faces are it. They are even more underrated than The Kinks. Pity they couldn't hold it together any longer than they did but their members did go to make some mind-blowing stuff in their own right (Faces and Humble Pie, etc.)

You may very well be right. Admittedly I'm not a big Small Faces fan. I think why so many think the Kinks are underrated is because they ARE known and they had hits. They just consistently got the short end of the stick. For example, You Really Got Me is an instantly recognizable song thats in the top 20 of rock songs all time (I would guess). Yet they still don't really get the respect they deserve. Lola and All Day And All Of The Night and a few others are also universally well known, yet the Kinks are never mentioned in that "pantheon of rock". They are typically looked over. To me, the Small Faces never had that. They were extremely talented, but they didn't have the instantly recognizable songs or Ray's genius unique lyrics to really elevate them.

So I see them as more "one of those bands that unfortunately never gets the light shed on them like they should", as opposed to the Kinks who are pretty much equal to the Stones, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, but are frequently not listed as such for a variety of reasons. Just for some reason, the Kinks were "big" without still seeming that "big". Like everyone knows them, but its like their legacy is constantly minimized. The Small Faces are just a really good band people should know more about.

I would put "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" easily over anything by The Kinks or The Who or Led Zeppelin. Only the Stones and Beatles bettered them. The Small Faces just didn't produce too many albums.
