Mick's 80's Beard
Posted by: Sam Spade ()

Are they any photo's out there of Mick sporting his beard in the early 80's?

Anyone have a clue as to why he grew the beard?

Also, any pic's of Mick's wrist with the stitches? I remember he leaned against a plate glass window at Gurney's Inn on Montauk, Long Island in 75 or 76...it was a nasty gash, took about 12 stitches to close it up.

Mick had a beard at least once in the 60s - there's a pretty famous photo of him and Brian both with full beards. i'll see if i can find it.
i reckon he probably grew it because he felt like it.
meanwhile, here's a shot from 1980 - i have no (0) idea whether the beard is real or not, though.

Yeah with sssoul...you'll find it. Mick and Brian, dressed in monkey hair jackets are having a private laugh over a wine or two.

its real i think cause i have a great interview with mick n keith on rockers 80
and they are talking about emotional rescue and mick has the full beard
so i dont think he would have a fake beard on to do an interview
btw they are both high as a kite during the interview, keith interupts mick quite often and imho mick seems a bit annoyed at times

I seem to recall an interview where Mick refused to have his pic taken because he shaved his beard off the day before. It may have been a Rolling Stone or People Magazine interview.

As for the autheticity of the beard, I believe it was real in the early 80's. Jim Morrison wasn't a hairy individual, yet he had a heavy beard as well.

With sssoul thanks for the pic.

Had missed his 80´s beard.
In 1969 the beard had at least that length or worse.

it's on display in the cover art to ER as well, Baboon Bro my dear, despite that "thermal" effect or whatever it's called.
i've called in the cavalry regarding that shot with Brian and the hairy coat, and hope my reinforcements will be cantering in soon to post it for our viewing pleasure. :E

I think his beard in '69 was for Ned Kelly.

true, he did have a scraggly little beard in Ned Kelly, but if it was his own he grew it on the way to Australia after the Hyde Park gig. i'm not sure what year the photo i'm thinking of is from, but my memory of it would place it more like 67 than 69.

i can't believe i'm expounding on Mick's facial hair - someone start some kind of cool guitar thread, won't you please?! :E

I have a good version of bearded Mick & Brian, but don't have it handy right now. I did find a small version on this web page:

I will try to post a full size version later today or tomorrow...

He looks so incredibly different.
10 years older than he was actually.

It reminds me of Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. I don't like it. He looks like Jesus.

People, people! The beard is NOT real!!!!! Look at the thousands of pictures of Jagger taken thru the years. There is never any evidence of whiskers or stubble on his chin even, much less his whole face! His face is virtually baby smooth in 99% of the photos you'll see, except for the short time he seems to have sported a relatively thin beard in the late 60's.

Also, why are there no photos of him with the beard at different stages of length? A beard like that takes at least a couple months to grow. Certainly his picture was taken during that period--so where are they? The beard is nothing more than an admittidly good costume accessory.

"It reminds me of Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. I don't like it. He looks like Jesus." (bartman)

- I dont like it either, I was ironic before.
But I dont think he looks like Jesus. He looks like sh*t.

"His face is virtually baby smooth in 99% of the photos you'll see, except for the short time he seems to have sported a relatively thin beard in the late 60's."

- I´m not sure either about the 80´s beard (when: 1980? 1984?).
On the other hand, Brad Pitt had a "full" beard once.
But go back look at the 60´s pics; this is no thin beard, it´s Morrison-like.
But the latter did sure fit much better in his.

a costume accessory for what? I cant believe I'm reading this...

As said earlier, Mick is bearded in the "Emotional rescue" cover photos, despite the thermal photography

Plus, if you've ever seen a video of the Mick and keith interview on the Jamaican TV programme "Earl Chin's Rockers '80" around the time of the ER sessions, you'll see that he has a lengthy beard during that interview. That interview was taped in December 1979.

He shaved it off not that long before ER was released. I recall seeing quite a few newspaper photos of Mick around late '79/early 1980 where he had a lengthy full beard.

The beard he wears in that famous pic of him and Brian grinning each other is different to the one he 'wore' in 'Ned Kelly' (which was I believe a false one). Its quite obvious it was some time before Ned Kelly by the fact that not only is he clean shaven at Hyde Park and all the other Tv and media appearances in mid 1969 but also the fact that Brian is in the same pic.

I would be really upset if Mick ever toured like that.

It's just not how I want to see him.

The Mick and Brain photo must be from mid '68 right? Or late '68? None of the spoke tro eachother in '69 and MIck and Brain had both longer hair by 69. The Ned Kelly is a bad fake.

The photo of Mick & Brian with beards seems to be from January, 1968. rollingstones.com has the following archive entry for January 18, 1968:
"Back in London, Mick and Marianne continue to play the part of hippest couple in Rock. Not averse to a brush with the British aristocracy, they attend a party thrown by the Duke of Bedford for The Supremes. Brian comes along as well. On this rare occasion, both he and Mick are seen sporting a beard. The same day, Brian is seen at the launch party for the new band Grapefruit at London’s Hanover Grand. The Beatles’ John, Paul and Ringo also turn up. Grapefruit are the first signing to The Beatles’ Apple Records label."

Some sources have the party for The Supremes dated as January 28, but all seem to agree that it was sometime in January, 1968. We know that the beards were gone by the end of April when the JJF promos were filmed.

Now take a good look at the beard Jagger in the pic with Jones. There is simply NO Way the beard in the '80 photo is anywhere near the same in coverage on his face! C'mon people!

I certain the 1980/Emot. Rez. beard was real 'coz I've seen press shots of it in its 'stubbly' stage. I sort of like the thermograhic pics from EM w/Mick's beard; makes 'im look like Dickens or Galsworthy in the early 1900s.
