I do have to mention something about Mick and Keith's early songwriting. A few of the hits were written in the key of E major. The Last Time, Satisfaction, Get Off of My Cloud and 19th Nervous Breakdown. Can anyone explain this? Was it because Mick had a limited vocal range? Keith only new a major scale in the key of E? I always wondered this point. Granted they got more diverse key wise later on when they wrote, but four hits in a row in the key of E makes me scratch my head. All great songs I might add.

Very interesting yeah. Mick wrote Let it bleed and YCAGWYW in C and I think he usually does? Keith in E?

I definitely agree that the arrangements are crucial to making a great track!

Quite interesting is that the first Stones album not to have the "Arranged by the Rolling Stones" credit is Beggars Banquet.
Either Mick and Keith didn´t allow as much input as before, or Brian/Bill/Charlie didn´t (couldn´t/wouldn´t?) contribute as much anymore...

Only just started reading this thread this morning.

Most interesting bit of Stones nostalgia for a long time. >grinning smiley<

Has the postman delivered the goodies yet ?

I would be playing that tape a few times to analyze the content ,and then give my review of it.

It's like Christmas as a kid, wondering what's inside the wrapped up present. smileys with beer

No that's business for sure. Meaning everything in the studio will be credited Jagger/Richards and produced by Jimmy Miller. And the producer was damn important, vital to say the least. SFTD evolving from Dear Mr fantasy is a good example.

someone emailed me that they had a tape which was made of the famous bathroom song writing session - where ALO locked mick and keith in and told them not to come out until they had written a song. as we know, they wrote "as tears go by" that day. apparently keith sang lead some of the older versions, with mick providing percussion by banging on the toilet seat. the recording is claimed to have several of these versions, as well as an early version of "had it with you", which was resurrected and remixed for inclusion on "dirty work". rumor is that "had it with you" is actually *about* ALO.

there's also an email going around that in an unreleased outtake of the chess recording sessions you can hear muddy waters painting in the background, but it's unclear whether or not this is apocryphal.

Quality is ok, pretty hissy though and the cassette has the wobbles in places.

Nazi stuff takes up about 15 minutes. It's just what sounds like an organ drone with speech over the top.

However, once the nazi stuff cuts out there's some music featuring what sounds like dulcimer with acoustic guitar and then some messing about on piano.

thumbs up

Thanks, His Majesty, for the videos and all the information! The music in the videos sounds good, I think - sounds very much like the siexties hippie culture (especially the first one with the guitars).

Some brief snatches...

WOW! This is much more than I'd expected. Sounds to me like possibly Keith playing guitar. Incredibly exciting!
