When the Whip Comes Down from the 1981 tour for ex. Hampton

The first time I really noticed Bill coming along was Around and Around, where his playing gets that trademark rubbery sound. Then his magic emerges on Satisfaction where his bass plays a very important counterpoint. He plays a similar role on Get Off Of My Cloud and then he's really noticeable on 19th Nervous Breakdown with the Diddley-divebomber runs.

He's very important to the Sticky Fingers album, and yet his presence is cut back on Exile. Still, he's fantastic on the lead cut, Rocks Off. Except for Sympathy, I always felt Richards and Taylor were imitating how Bill would have played it, which is especially true for Happy and Tumbling Dice.

Live, he is the master of the Hampton '81 DVD version of Black Limousine. And of course, Miss You.

I love his lines on Respectable and Lies from SG. The work on Hot Stuff , Down In The Hole , and Melody is great too

Did he play bass on the songs Undercover and Emotional Rescue?

Bill said Billy Preston actually came up with the Miss You bass line when jamming with Mick.

I have Majesties in my car's stereo at the moment, and have lately been admiring Bill's bass on Citadel.

They did some good ones but not the greatest. Bill really came into his own as a live player, some pretty superb bass playing. I don't understand why people are still resolute in not recognising Bills talent as a bassist.

Love in Vain live is a lovely bit of playing from Bill. And the one I always recommend to people Let It Bleed 1981, commands that song.

Bill himself is very proud of his bass playing on Parachute Woman. A pity he is so often too low in the mix. winking smiley

My current "favorite" Bill Wyman riff is something he DIDN'T play, LOL --

---> Waiting it out, waiting it out, and NOT coming in until the chorus of Honky Tonk Women? Effing BRILLIANT. Pretty much any live version.

Especially live in '75. So nonchalant about everything. The intro goes on and on, the verse....And when he finally comes in, the song EXPLODES into partyland. Kills me every time.

Love it.

I was going to post the exact same thing! I LOVE his "playing the silence" on HTW! As a bass palyer myself, I can't begin to tell you how many bands I've pissed off over the years by refusing to come in until the chorus on HTW. It's SUCH a cool effect. Thankfully for me, after I do it a couple of times, most of the bands I've worked with have realized just how cool and effective it is and generally have come to like Bill's original concept better than the "bar band typical" they thought they needed.

Another song that uses the same effect is Free's "All Right Now". I've wondered for years if they took the idea from Bill/The Stones.

Peace,
Mr DJA

There are many great Wyman moments.

I Wanna Be Your Man are pretty brutal for 1963.

Route 66 and What A Shame has great walking-bass lines.

His lines on (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction and Under My Thumb are extremely creative, mainly because his bass lines are working AGAINST the melody.

There are great and inspired bass lines on Jig-Saw Puzzle, Sway, Rocks Off, Hot Stuff and Far Away Eyes.

Even though he didn't come up with the disco bass line for Miss You, he developed it into his own. We don't know how Billy Preston played it, but I will bet that Bill made his own interpretion of it.

After 1971, there seems to be some kind of lack in interest in being creative.
Bill had other things on his mind, namely chicks and solo-albums ;-)

Bill was great in Fingerprint File, wait that was Keith.

Loved Bill on Sympathy, oh wait that was Keith.

Loved the groove in Tumblin Dice. Ummm that was Taylor.

OK I'll give him Satisfaction. Great counterline to the main lick.

Bill knocked Marianne, but probably because shortly before in her first memoir she relates seeing Keith play bass and tells the reader she thinks the Stones only kept Bill in the band for tours, because he hardly ever seemed to play bass in the studio.
