My bad.....sadly, I just learned that guitarist Paul Atkinson passed away in 2004.

The Rascals reunion tour has me wondering if there are any other groups that released records in the 1960s who are still touring with ALL of their original members. I came up with only one:

Crosby, Stills and Nash

Then I wondered if there were any other groups that released records in the 1960s who could, theoretically, tour with ALL of their original members. I came up with:


Simon and Garfunkel
Cream
Three Dog Night
The Guess Who

The only original member in The Guess Who now is bass player Jim Kale. Cummings and Bachman are not there. Kale owns the rights to the name. It will never happen.

Three Dog Night doesn't include Chuck Negron or original bass player Joe Shermie who passed away many years ago. Negron has been black balled for life.

Guess Who has gotten together as recently as ten or so years ago, so I wouldn't say never, maybe not full on tour. To another post, Zombies guitarist died a few years back, the other four played the O&O gigs a few years ago.

Cumming and Bauchman hold a grudge. In fact they refer to the touring Guess who as Kales Clones.

I was gonna say Jethro Tull, but I think Mick Abrahams recently passed away. The lineup that recorded their second album, Stand Up, released in 1969, are all still living, though.

Check that. Mick Abrahams is still with us! Don't know what made me think otherwise .... Actually, I guess all of the early Tull lineups could theoretically still reunite.

Didn't someone in Tull have a sex-change operation? Still the same person I guess..............

Name a few. But the band still had to be successful.

Genesis - with out Peter Gabriel

Moody Blues - with out Mike Pinder

What about if there's a name change? Like Rage Against The Machine replaced the lead singer with Chris Cornell and changed their name to Audioslave. Who were pretty successful.

The Byrds still had a pretty successful career after Crosby's departure and a few others.

Fleetwood Mac were very successful after several different lineups, namely the Peter Green lineup.

Humble Pie's biggest commercial success "30 Days In The Hole" came after Frampton had left.

Pink Floyd of course took off huge after Syd was gone.

Then there's the Stones obviously.

I love R.E.M., but they weren't nearly as popular or successful after Berry left. Not because he had left, but they'd just already peaked and started to lose popularity by the late 90's. They were still a really good band, but they entered the "elder statesmen of rock" category who put out albums that were good enough to tour behind, but weren't nearly as popular as their 80's and 90's stuff. I like "Up", "Reveal", "Around The Sun", "Accelerate" and "Collapse Into Now", but they'll never make the list of classic R.E.M. albums. Their last really great album was "New Adventures In Hi-Fi", which some people don't really include either. I think it's their best album though. That's all opinion though, but from a strictly commercial standpoint, they stopped being relevant around the time of "Up".

Interesting how many of the bands already mentioned, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Genesis, AC/DC; arguably the Allmans, Van Halen, and even the Stones, went on to have even greater commercial success after losing key, founding members.

The Beach Boys at various points (including now) had little or no Brian Wilson for much of their career. Now they are also doing it without Carl Wilson. Not sure that I'd consider Dennis Wilson a "key" member although I did like it when he was in the band. At this point I think I'd be less likely to go see the Beach Boys than I would be to go see Brian Wilson.

Although both bands are bashed around here, both Styx & Journey are doing pretty well in their current line-ups without their former lead vocalists.

Van Halen also did pretty well without David Lee Roth... At least while Sammy was in the band, anyway.

Metallica lost Cliff Burton and went from cult heroes to superstars.

AC/DC moved on without Bon Scott.

Def Leppard lost Steve Clark but has done pretty well with Vivian Campbell in his place.

I don't know that I would give Queen credit for moving on without Freddie but I did enjoy some of the music with Paul Rogers fronting the band.

Lynyrd Skynyrd post plane crash.

Little Feat post Lowell George took a few years but came back pretty strong. I haven't come to my own conclusion as to how they're doing without Ritchie Hayward.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers losing both Hillel Slovak & John Frusciante made for some tough times.

The Velvet Underground. They continued without John Cale and even after Lou Reed left.

First that comes to mind is The Doors.

God knows how they had the nerve to continue and call it The Doors.

I believe the best known line-up of the Turtles (featuring Johnny Barbata on drums rather than original skinsman the late Don Murray) are all on the planet.
