Fritz Rau passed away yesterday. He was the promoter of many Stones tours. Many people will remember his anecdotes about his time as a promoter.

I met Fritz Rau twice. He had such an extraordinary aura, you could feel and see that music history surrounded him. Like Mick Jagger once said: "He's the godfather of us all. Rock'n'Rau forever!".

RIP, Fritz. You were a very special person!

I met Fritz Rau one time and had a very nice talk with him. He told me, The Rolling Stones are the absolute greatest of all.

Thank you for the many concert shows, which you promoted!

RIP Fritz Rau

He did Dylan's 78 German tour including the legendary show at Nuremberg.

He certainly was someone artists could have a conversation with between shows...

He made only one mistake in his life. Sending Peter Maffay (a German Singer ) in 1982 as a support act of the Rolling Stones in the Stadiums. He was just a poor guy lost. But he has his fans and his crowd.
I just do not know why Fritz Rau did that.
But he was the biggest inventor to present international guests at first glance in Germany.

since organizing and promoting concerts ,exspecially in this size, is a big money business. often support acts are a future investment,to promote em as well.in case maffay it worked for both, rau did a lot of maffay concerts afterwards, so this "mistake" isnt a mistake in business sense.Fritz Rau will be missed, but im pretty sure his heritage will live for a long time.He is in RnR heaven now...so cheers smiling smiley

Was it really Fritz Rau's idea to bring Peter Maffay as supporting act?

I remember that the Mick once said in an interview that the idea for that tour was to have the biggest national act as supporting band in every country they perform. At that time it was Maffay for Germany.

According to Fritz Rau's 2005 autobiography, "50 Jahre Backstage", it was indeed him who suggested Maffay to Jagger and Bill Graham. Maffay's manager at the time wasn't too fond of the idea, but Maffay himself apparently was eager to "stand up for the challenge" of opening for the Stones.
