Just for the record, the Black Crowes have been touring on their "Lay Down With Number 13" tour that started in Manchester on March 24 and have since played over 60 different songs...pretty amazing. Long live the Crowes!

Did ya get the show from livedownloads.com so you can listen to it in the comfort of your own dry space?

P.S. Descending would've been awesome to hear in the rain!

I am really looking forward to seeing them in August in Michigan. I will say though, their set lists and playing time seem much shorter than in the past. And not as much variety. Seem to be sticking to pretty much the same set lists every night with a two or three songs difference. Ok, seems like they want to get really tight with the new guitarist, which is cool. Their version of Medicated Goo sounds very cool, as does Hard to Handel/Hush (very creative melding there). Chris seems to be in very good voice.

I saw the Crowes live with Jimmy Paige around 10 years ago or so. They did mostly Zeppelin Physical Graffiti songs but some other Zep and theirs thrown in the mix. They rock hard, Chris is a good frontman, the drummer was outstanding. Rich Robinson played great to some difficult songs and his stage sounds is awesome. He was using some boutique type tube stacks, I forget the name. He is really good. Tasteful leads where the notes really count to enhance the song.

The Black Crowes played last night in KC, I didnt go, but this reviewer gave them a great review. For the record, the reviewer Tim Finn, is a long long term concert reviewer, and more often than not sounds pretty unimpressed with most groups, so if/when he writes a good review like this, it is a good sign. Facts be known I probably wouldnt post it here unless I was surprised that he was so impressed.

Black Crowes take a rowdy crowd on a boisterous flight

The Kansas City Star [www.kansascity.com]

SETLIST
Been a Long Time (Waiting on Love); Jealous Again; Thick ‘N’ Thin; Hotel Illness; Good Morning Captain; Ballad in Urgency; Wiser Time; She Talks to Angels; Whoa, Mule; Thorn in My Pride; Soul Singing; Hard to Handle/Hush. Encore: Remedy

REVIEW
Black Crowes shows have always been something of a crap-shoot, an investment vulnerable to a few variables: the setlist and how it was cobbled together; the band’s mood that particular evening; the band’s personnel on that tour (it has 11 former members); and the time spent indulging in instrumental jams.

Friday night, before a boisterous crowd that nearly sold-out the VooDoo Lounge inside Harrah’s casino, all those variables were aligned. The band brought its A-game, the setlist was stocked with fan favorites; the instrumentals were dynamic and concise; and the band appeared to be in a congenial mood. It made for a show that will likely go down as one of the year’s best.

They opened with something relatively recent: a revved-up version of “Been a Long Time (Waiting on Love),” from “Before the Frost ... Until the Freeze,” an album not yet 4 years old. From there, they jumped back almost 20 years, to “Jealous Again,” a track from their debut and best-selling album, “Shake Your Money Maker.” They treated the crowd to three more of its tracks, including their famous cover of Otis Reddings’s “Hard to Handle.”

The show lasted about 100 minutes, and the first 25 were spent on celebrating the Crowes’ signature blend of Southern rock, soul, gospel and blues: songs like “Thick ‘N’ Thin” and “Hotel Illness.”

The Crowes have been around for nearly 25 years, but they aren’t that old. Lead singer Chris Robinson is only 46, and his expressive voice can still do plenty of heavy-lifting. The sound was good Friday evening, as it usually is in the VooDoo, but if there was anything to complain about it was how all the guitar/keyboard/drum fanfare going on around him at times buried his vocals. But that’s almost nit-picking.

The band still features three founding members: Robinson, his brother Rich (guitar and vocals) and drummer Steve Gorman. They were joined by longtime bassist Sven Pipien, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and the band‘s newest member, Jackie Greene, who has replaced Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) on guitar and mandolin.

He and Rich Robinson dueled and danced on lead guitar all night.

They sounded lean and tight and in fighting shape most of the night. The middle of the show included some wild instrumental odysseys. None was more visceral and transcendent than during “Thorn in My Pride,” one of several highlights. The others: the fusion of “Hard to Handle” with “Hush,” the Billy Joe Royal song made famousby Deep Purple; “Soul Singing”; and “She Talks to Angels,” which prompted an outbreak of cell-phone video recordings.

========================Hold on, stop for second...
Video recordings you say?? Really? How about SHOW US ONE! winking smiley

Sweeeeet.... but would have been sweeter withOUT the talking and "WOOOOOO GIRLS"
========================Ok, back to the review

After that one, Chris Robinson said with some snark in his voice, “You can put your phones away now. You don’t know this song.” Then they played “Whoa, Mule,” another highlight.

Otherwise, this was a large crowd (more than 1,500) that was engaged and enthusiastic all night. They roared back the chorus to “Hard to Handle” and then unleashed a hail of “na-na-na-nas” during “Hush.” They gave “Remedy,” the closer, the same treatment. When the show was over, the band took some extra time during its bows to give the crowd some applause of its own, a sign of an ideal evening: Everyone went home satisfied. Nice! Will be seeing them in a couple of weeks in Tilburg, Holland and only got one wish: Medicated Goo. They really own that song!

Great band. Got see them in April. It's like psychadelic freak-flag church when they start with "Movin' On Down the Line". Great starter tune before your pre-show smoke wears off. Killer versions of WiserTime, Thorn, SomeTimes Salvation and Handle/Hush. I really wanted to see Luther again, but you guys were right: Jackie Green was a fun and sharp guitarist. They do know how to pick them.

For those who use torrents, somebody upped the FM Easter Sunday show from Atlanta 1999 recently in Flac. I'd been looking for it for quite a while. Downloaded pretty quick actually. Get it while you can! Audley Freed from Cry OF Love rocks, another wise choice!

I went to the 2 London gigs recently.
Good, but not spectacular. Still a bit rusty.
And I really don't like the new guy.

They played 19 songs back then. The second night they must have played 12 different ones than the night before.
If I see the setlists now they only play 12, 13 songs.

Will see them again in Belgium in a couple of weeks.

So by saying 'more authentic' you're really saying it's not authentic because authentic would be... authentic. Like 'kind of pregnant', right?

I was there.
Much better than the London shows I saw a couple of months ago (and they were pretty good).
My only complaint of this Belgium gig: they played nothing from their latest albums and 5 cover songs. There's a curfew @ the Ancienne Belgique...that made them play a shorter set.
But man, they were good.

Still, Jackie Greene can't hold a candle to Marc Ford (or in fact every guitar player that played next to Rich). But he's alright.
