"It's because of them I didn't taste my first banana until I was ten." — Ian Stewart as he watched the Germans search the Stones' van at the German border.

Comments by the video uploader:

"Kevin Spacey was filming Beyond the Sea in Germany. All his extras were German. He blamed their inability to clap on the 2 and the 4 on their being German. I'm not sure the science behind that but european influence is not good for contemporary music clapping."

It's a Zen thing.

The german buddhists clap with one hand on 1 and 3.

Mick is OK with that.

I remember a concert in Bern, Switzerland, where the late great Willy DeVille stopped the band from playing and shouted at the audience "don't clap like germans..."

I've always wondered about 1 & 3 clapping. Always think that people who do that must surely not be feeling any funkiness in the music at all. Maybe they're rubbish at sex too? I personally always make love on the 2 and the 4.Phew.

I think that German music, well the roots thereof, is close to the march, pomp music and waltz structure i.e. 2/4 and 3/4 respectively. The strong beat is the first one, so I guess they just transfer this 'sense' of strong beat to 4/4 as well, by starting to clap on the first beat and eventually this leads them to the third. You actually can listen to some rock'n' roll songs having the first and third beat as the strong ones e.g. Memphis Tennessee by Chuck Berry.

Rubbish I just listened to a bootleg from Koln 1990 and there's hardly any clapping on 1 and 3 to be heard. A lot of clapping on all four beats though. Not sure if that's a typical German habit. Probably not.

To swing it a bit you need to hang a fraction on the 4th beat.

You can hear how Chuck Berry was influenced by such jazz artists as Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra--in fact, the main riff and melody of Memphis Tennessee was lifted directly from a Tommy Dorsey tune. "Boogie Woogie" was a favorite of Sam Phillips of Sun Records in Memphis.
