Bit of a strange thread to start, but here goes. The Stones must have been influenced by some gospel music, especially round about Exile with Let It Loose, Shine A Light, Just Wanna See His Face. Kinda strange they did those songs in the south of France, when you think about it.

So I just wanna know, do you guys know of any good gospel music? Doesn't have to be all "Lor' have mercy on our po' souls" sorta thing, but what the Stones might've listened to at the time.

Some songs were done in Los Angeles where Jagger was attending a local church.
The choir on Shine A Light is from that church I believe...

Also look for early Aretha Franklin and Staple Singers recordings. Both were gospel acts for years in the 1950's before "going secular" in the 1960's.

Considering that I live in the middle of "The Bible Belt" I should be able to come up with some "Southern Gospel" acts but am having a hard time thinking of any right now... What was the name of June Carter Cash's family act before she met & married Johnny Cash? If I'm not mistaken, it may have just been "the Carter Family". If I remember correctly, they were very well known but may have been a bit early to have had much influence on the Stones.

Just found this wikipedia link which may help you in the right direction.

The Deep River Boys "I'm Trampin'" from the 1930's and the Swan Silvertones "Just a Little Talk with Jesus" from the early 1950's
great Gospel music in the Jubilee style......

Why, thank you, that's mighty fine a y'all.

There was a neighbour we had once, who liked to wash her massive SUV in the driveway on early Sunday mornings, with the car doors open, and playing gospel music as loud as possible. So from those experiences I grew to dislike it, but I reckon there must be some great stuff to be found if I look.

Cheers.

Al Green comes to mind too...and Johnny Cash put out quite a bit of gospel music too, as well as his other 'Sun' coworkers (Elvis, Jerry Lee, etc.).

Wingless Angels is kinda gospel? And how about that one he worked on with his step-sister??

good little richard gospel at the apollo with billy preston

so that sent me looking for mick's gospel "out of focus" also with billy preston,
and whatdya know! a never-seen-by-me official mick video, with a much less
gospel version of the same song!

and finally something i think is out of this world, a primitive but purely
white form of gospel music called "sacred harp music", as recorded by
alan lomax in 1942. Lord!

The Stones must have been influenced by some gospel music,...

I think Mick used to listen to gospel music on the coloured radio station while driving home thru Bakersfield on Sunday mornings.

You got to listen to the late Larry Norman, he was the "father of Gospel rock".
He was a fan of the Stones and had always a Stones tape with him he said in a interview.
He sometimes did some "Jagger moves" in his consert and saying that " maybe mankind are coming from the monkyes after all !"

Start with the CD "Only wisiting this planet"

Gospel wise, I don't much like Al Green's gospel material, preferring Belle where you can hear him having this debate between the sacred and the profane.

However, I love the Abyssinian Baptist Choir's Raising The Rafter's album which came out on CBS.

I also think Amazing Grace by Aretha Franklin is an amazing album of any genre: it also acts as the perfect compliment to Live @ The Fillmore.

The Blind Boys of Alabama are also great, and do an excellent Just Wanna See His Face on the Spirt of the Century album. I also appreciate all the Blind Boys of Alabama albums from Spirt onwards, even the Xmas album with Tom Waits duetting on an extraordinary Go Tell It On The Mountain.

I also like the Dixie Hummingbirds on the album they did before Ira Tucker died, Diamond Celebration. It was produced by Larry Campbell, and features Levon Helm and Garth Hudson. There's an amazing And We Bid You Goodnight on the album. Speaking of And We Bid You Goodnight - check out Blue Murder's version of it, which is included on the Watersons' Mighty River of Song box set on Topic records. Even at a young age Eliza Carthy has an amazing talent. Blue Murder also covered an excellent Where No One Stands Alone on their eponymous album.

There's also Elvis's gospel material anthologised on Peace In The Valley. Elvis put his heart and soul into gospel, and one of his best How Great Thou Art's if from a concert six weeks' before his demise.

What else ? The Fairfield Four Live on The Mountain Stage is great, and features Elvis Costello and Steve Earle as guests. Elvis Costello sings a great That Day Is Done, which he wrote with Paul McCartney. Isaac Freeman also did an excellent solo album on Lost Highway, entitled Beautiful Stars, which is all gospel.

Who else ? Aaron Neville does a quite beautiful version of Saving Grace on the Bob Dylan tribute album, Gotta Serve Somebody:the Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan. Aaron also did an excellent gospel album, produced by Joe Henry, entitled I Know I've Been Changed. Shirley Caesar's Gotta Serve Somebody and The Fairfield Four's Are You Ready are also top Dylan gospel covered by the right artist.

I also happen to like Slow Train Coming, as it is quite subtle in relation to Saved, which is more direct, and would love to see Bootleg Series Vol 10 by Dylan as a gospel concert.

However, other gospel that I have includes some amazing sacred steel by the Campbell Brothers & Kate Jackson on Arhoolie. I recommend Pass Me Not, as it is a great album. You'll also find The Campbell Brothers on one of the Sopranos soundtracks. Aubrey Ghent is also an amazing sacred steelist.

Also regarding sacred steel: check out The Word on ropeadope records, which features Robert Randolph and John Medeski amongst others. It is an instrumental gospel album that is joyous to listen to. It is also called Joyous Sound.

Jerry Lee Lewis also does a good gospel album that Bear Family have only recently issued on cd. It features him live in church in Memphis, and he is utterly passionate, utterly committed, and dates from 1970. The title on cd is Old Time Religion.

You especially can't go wrong with Blind Willie Johnson. Not everyone's idea of traditional black gospel; a more bluesy solo artist. But what a voice, and that guitar playing...thumbs up
