The 60's - Good or Bad?
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()

The decade is always held up as the shining moment in history, but lots of negatives too.

Pros:

Greatest music decade
Finally some real civil rights
The idea of peace, love, and harmony
People opposed to war (all wars, not just Vietnam)
Cool muscle cars
JFK, RFK, and MLK
Went to the moon

Cons:

The drug culture has caused many problems since then
Rioting in the streets
JFK, RFK, and MLK assassinated
Astronauts dying
50000 American troops killed in SE Asia

Your thoughts?

1.300.000 vietnamese (north and south) were also killed. 3,8 million people in total.

about the drug culture-

could argue that alcohol while legal has caused much worse problems.

its prohibition that causes the real trouble.

and we know that from the really stupid attempt at alcohol prohibition.

any decade that introduced tiny tin and gilligan's island can't be anything but good

You missed some:

Pros -

Golden Age of European cinema, the likes of which has never been equaled.

The openness and friendliness among people including strangers.

The tolerance of diversity and emphasis on naturalness, as opposed to the current culture of physical conformity.

No obesity problem.

The enfranchisement of marginalised groups including gays, women, children, the handicapped.

The advent of reliable birth control and available terminations, giving women complete control of their fertility.

Cons -

Smoking everywhere.

i never forget great television. get smart is arguably the funniest show of all time. i'd kill to be in a room where mel brooks and buck henry are cooking up comedy material.

batman was my favorite show of the decade.

i picked tiny tim and gilligan's island because they have survived as more representative cultural monuments to the decade.

I agree with you. As an aside, if you were to ever pick up the complete DVD set of the Get Smart series, you would not be disappointed. In addition to every episode, there are a myriad of extras, intro's to each episode by Barbara Feldon, narrations of several episodes by Mel and Buck, interviews of the entire cast (except Chief of course) from late 90s I think, a celebrity roast of Don Adam from early 2000s which is a scream.

I was in my teens back then so I remember it as a great time...discovering music ...girls ..............bad thing about the 60's we weren't aloud allowed to play soccer on the street...if we get caught by the police the ball was confiscate ....so in most of the time we had to run if they saw us playing grinning smiley

Yep (generally speaking), I do.

Anyone who picks a fight with the CIA, FBI, Mafia, Racists, Military, Bankers and Oil men is OK with me.

Please.. don't go on about unsubstanciated stories about their sex lifes.. Monroe, drugs, office interns etc...

JFK and RFK were so important the assasination needed to continue after they died up until today.

Perpetual assassination.

They upset a lot of people.

Nixon & Agnew (sort of a Bush Cheney in reverse).
The constant and never ending threat of nuclear war. (I had nightmares about it as a kid).
Comic books rising to 12 cents.
Gary Puckett & the Union Gap.
Violent, alcoholic grown ups.
The destruction of the credibility of the Presidency by Lyndon Johnson.
Speed.

We could go on and on and on about the 60's
Almost too many groups to even mention , even that other English group ...

The dawning of the age of Aqurias that almost peaked at Woodstock
and almost died at Altamount.

And besides Kennedys and King ....
Malcom X, Medgar Evans, ...

I think we'll be talking about the 60's for a long, long time.

Was there some bad things? ...Oh sure, but to me, the Good way out ways the bad.

I think they will come back, in a more pure form, and lead us to a new golden age.
Not sure when ... but eventually.

It was a pretty good time to be growing up. I was 7 in 1960. Amazing to think how little kids like myself just inhaled the British Invasion, Motown, the blues. We were very young fanatics! Piles of 45's and a growing stack of lp's. By the time 1970 came around things were moving pretty fast. The music scene through the 60's was simply great via AM radio and of course going down to the local record store. Amazing to think how diverse music was on the radio. It was all there in Chicago. FM radio coming in the late 60's was a whole new world. It was so cool. Plentiful concerts with many hot bands that were affordable to go and see. A very interesting time to be on the planet as long as you didn't get shipped off to Viet Nam. I was lucky to have been just under the wire and only had to deal with the lottery when the war was winding down. A very energized time where many felt anything was possible, as idealized as that might sound today.

More good than bad from the perspective of this participant/commentator. Been a heavy Stones fan for 40 years counts for something I guess.
