This is so terribly sad:

Levon Helm, the drummer for the Canadian roots-rock band known simply as The Band, has died at age 71, according to Rolling Stone Magazine.

The magazine quoted guitarist Larry Campbell as saying, “He passed away peacefully at 1:30 this afternoon surrounded by his friends and bandmates. All his friends were there, and it seemed like Levon was waiting for them. Ten minutes after they left we sat there and he just faded away.”

For several years I have wanted to attend one of his "Midnight Rambles". He was a great musician. RIP Levon Helm.

Just heard the sad news on the car stereo awhile ago while pulling into my driveway.
They then played The Weight, and I had to sit and listen at FULL blast.
Brought a tear to my eye...very sad.

RIP Levon.

Very sad news. A great singer and drummer, passed away too young.

I am deeply saddened at the demise of Levon.

The sad thing about The Band, as a musical entity, was that for all the excellent music that was made, none of the members got away unscathed, and that there seemed a curse attached. Richard and Rick both died before their time, Garth, Robbie, and Levon all faced problems within their lives at some stage. It makes Daniel & The Sacred Harp awfully prescient.

Levon's voice was the voice of an indomitable spirit, only quelled today with his death. You can hear the indomitable, unyielding, powerful vocals on The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Hang Up My Rock n Roll Shoes, All La Glory, Strawberry Wine, Ain't Got No Home, Didn't it Rain, Back To Memphis, Ain't No More Cane, Yazoo Street Scandal, Don't Ya Tell Henry, Ophelia, Evangeline.

There's also a wonderful live 1977 Concert by The RCO Allstars, which is Levon meeting half of The MGs, American Son, Paul Kennerley's Legend of Frank & Jesse James, Will The Circle Vol 2, which show that, post band, Levon had not lost his magic, and that he remained the indomitable Southern soul force of nature.

Whereas Robbie Robertson made solo albums of soundscapes crafted by The Blue Nile, Peter Gabriel, and Daniel Lanois, Levon remained authentic, yet, apart from Jemima Surrender and Look Out Cleveland, he barely wrote an original tune, both with The Band and solo.

I would also add that the last three albums are excellent rootsy Americana affairs, wherein Levon is ably assisted by the great Larry Campbell, another former Dylan sideman.

To paraphrase the Paul Kennerley title that Levon recorded for Will The Circle Be Unbroken, I hope he gets his rewards. He has certainly rewarded us with his musical authenticity

Farewell, Levon...you were a great man and musician...you will be sorely missed.

Take what you need and leave the rest but they should never have taken the very best-

Great long interview with Levon by Max Weinberg:

[theband.hiof.no]

Max mentions that the first time he saw the Band was at The Garden State
Arts Center in 1969. Same as me! One of the best shows I ever saw, in terms
of pure music.

Just like "Music from Big Pink" is still one of the best albums I've ever heard.

Man what a terrible loss that is. What a suberb gentleman and what a great story his life is. Playing the juke joints for beer and ladies and onto one of the best songsmithing outfits in the history of popular music.

When he played and sang my heart swelled because he is such perfect southrn gentleman and great performer. A man's man playing in a rock band forever in my heart that's Levon to me.

First it's Richie Hayward from Little Feat and now Levon. Damn, the world is a smaller less interesting place tonight. The groove is almost gone. RIP Levon. You DA man. peace

Does it seem like there is some sort of accelerating exodus going on? seems like we are losing great ones every week... or maybe we are all just getting old...
