Davy Jones -- lead singer of The Monkees -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

An official from the medical examiner's office for Martin County, Florida confirmed with TMZ they received a call from Martin Memorial Hospital informing them that Jones had passed away.

Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and 4 daughters from previous marriages. He was 66-years-old.

Jones joined The Monkees in 1965 ... along with Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork ... and together they churned out a bunch of hits including, "Daydream Believer, "Last Train to Clarksville" and "I'm a Believer."

The group was initially cast by TV producers who wanted to create a scripted series about an actual rock n' roll band.



UPDATE -- A rep for Davy tells TMZ the singer died from a heart attack this morning.

I'm in shock, too. I saw The Monkees last July...it was honestly one of the best concerts I've ever seen...all three guys were in good voice and it was very entertaining. They played not only the hits, but several deep cuts.

The Monkees were real heroes to me at the time and even more so, later on, when I heard, and saw, Head and the incredible Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones album.

Sad news. Great voice and always had great energy on stage. Glad the Monkees got together for the few shows they did of their reunion tour.

My first crush too. So sad.

I believe he was from Manchester, I always heard a lot about those albums like Capricorn, etc. and Head and that they were good albums. Too, they've done some things modern day. Some good songs, I'll remember.

Sad. Remember the Monkeys from when I was really young.

Terrible news.

Wow. I really liked The Monkees. They got a bad rap for not playing their own instruments but those early records were great and they worked hard to prove what they could do, even rebelling against Don Kirshner. Jones was possibly the least talented musically, but he had a pleasant voice and fit in the group well. It's like pieces of my childhood disappearing every time someone like this passes away.
