British rock band The Rolling Stones were arrested at the airport in 1972 after assaulting a photographer, and were brought to the Warwick police station. Their flight could not land in Boston, where the band had a scheduled concert at Boston Garden, due to fog. They were processed quickly to avoid a riot at the Garden

Perhaps some of you remember this incident , The mayor of Boston came to their rescue to avoid a riot at The Boston Garden where they were scheduled to play . Former mayor Kevin White has passed away , here's a story .

Who was # 6012 ???

The Rolling Stones was arrested for assault and obstruction of police in 1972. The charges were eventually dropped but Mick Jagger was forced to plead guilty before being released. The mugshot taken that night has become legendary, but Mick Jagger wasn't actually the only Rolling Stone arrested that night. Keith Richards, the guitarist from The Rolling Stones, was arrested with Mick Jagger and three other members of the entourage of the legendary band. The five people, including Mick Jagger, were arrested on charges of assault and obstructing police. All five of them were arrested in Warwick, Rhode Island. All five, including Mick Jagger, were arrested because of a scuffle with a photographer and the incident caused a four-hour delay of their concert in Boston that night. All of the charges were dropped but the photo lives on.

Mick was arrested for trying to interfere with Keith's arrest.
Marshall Chess was arrested for trying to interfere with that, and Robert Frank was arrested for filming the whole thing.
Stan Moore (a security guy) was also arrested, apparently because the photographer complained about him too.
Bobby Keys really wanted to be arrested as well, as a show of solidarity, but the police didn't oblige him.

Robert Greenfiel witnessed the arrests, and the story is the best part of his book STP,
but he wasn't present at the booking or whatever it's called when they take the photos, so he didn't explain who got to be # 6012.

Thanks for the summary, sssoul. I also remember it as the best part of Greenfield's book. Wonder if it's preserved on film in Frank's vault somewhere. That would be a crazy watch for a Taylor-era Stones freak.

In order for Robert Greenfield to witness the arrests he would have had to be there. He was not. The story of the arrest, like the details of Washington, DC through Pittsburgh (4th-22nd July) were related to him after the tour. Greenfield was 86'd from the tour in Nashville on June 29th, in favour of Truman (known as Trouby Baby to the Tac Squad) Capote. Greenfield was able to cover the New York City shows because he still possessed his STP Crew badge.

Fascinating stuff...Keith in the 70s seemed to look for trouble. Though it was brave of Jagger to try to stop the arrest, I can imagine him pissed at Keith (I haven't read Greenfield's account, so don't know) for causing the arrest.

Unless this got the notoriety the Stones needed...and the delay of the concert at the Boston Garden worked to their advantage (thus Jagger pleased).

Wasn't there something in the Greenfield book that said Mick was ready to cancel the Boston gig (while in jail), but Keith said they had to go on

They didn't need the notoriety, and weren't looking for it as a publicity stunt.

There is film footage of the Stones arriving and being escorted into the Boston Garden. It is in the BBC, now called Getty, Film Archives. If one gains access and does a search on their website you can see it.

There is also brief footage (crowds lined up outside and Sweet Virginia) from the Albuquerque show in their archives as well.
