OT: Peter Gabriel and Sting: Rock Paper Scissors tour

Has anyone else seen this show this summer? It was absolutely FANTASTIC. I've seen well over 200 acts and this was honestly among the most fun and unique. It was at times funny, weird, sad, thrilling and silly.

Both of Peter's and Sting's bands stayed onstage together the entire time and played each others songs, with Peter and Sting frequently exchanging lead vocals. Neither of them left the stage for more than a song at a time...at times, Sting would just casually wander over to Peter's backup singers and sing backup with them; other times, Peter would sit on the drum riser with his keyboardist and just clap along to one of Sting's songs.

The backdrops and lighting were beautiful. It was very well-produced, with the vibe onstage managing to be both simultaneously highly competent and laidback, with several legendary "musician's musicians" in both bands (David Sancious on keyboards for Sting, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums for Sting, Tony Levin on bass for Peter).

Highly recommended if you can catch it before the end of summer. I hope they do more dates.

Really a great idea and a successful tour by any account. I saw them together in 86 but not like this. I think it's a better match for Sting than Paul Simon was...5 stars

Was Tony Levin playing a bass or the "Chapman Stick". I haven't followed him in a while and although I love the notes he plays, he kind of lost me as a player when he started using "the stick". Just curious. I know he sounds fantastic with either instrument.

Peace,
Mr DJA

He played strictly bass, but he did use his patented "funk fingers" on several songs, which was very cool:

I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even know how legendary Tony is. I saw the show in Worcester MA, and being that Tony is from Boston, he got a HUGE ovation.

Thanks kithriff99... Now I'm going to have to do some research on "funk fingers"!

Peace,
Mr DJA

Research results (for any interested bass players or others)

Funny to think that back in the early 90's both myself and the guitar player I was working with would borrow a guitar stick each from our drummer and would play a song with the stick in our right hands. It wasn't really about the sound though, it was mainly for the show (and somewhat to alleviate the boredom/monotony). Nice to know that we were at least in the same ballpark with a great like Mr. Levin!

More Peace,
Mr DJA

I'll see him in September with King Crimson.

Gabriel's set lists are as predictable as The Stones'. Never plays old Genesis - or much before 1983 - for that matter.

1982 Peter Gabriel Shock the Monkey and The Call, Poplar Creek, Chicago, marked annually 02 Aug on my calendar. Still have the plastic beer cup. It was either Fripp or Levin wearing black spandex tights wanting a beer. The chick at the counter wouldn't serve em since they didn't have any ID. Other people screamed until she served em. Drama in the beer line.

What a great concert that would have been, in 1987.

That's an ironic thing for a Stones fan to say, of all people.

And since several songs in the setlist came out post-'87, I'm afraid that it wouldn't have been possible without a rip in the space-time continuum.

Yes, but Darryl Jones would still have been with Peter Gabriel, so....there's that.

Actually he was with Sting back then, not Peter. He played bass on Sting's first solo album. I had forgotten about that!

He played with Gabriel, too, after he left Sting...Amnesty Tour in '88.

Saw all those shows and tours back then - it's like a whole other lifetime. Who knows where the time goes!
