Re: Some Girls - Were There 3 Versions of the Front Cover Art?

The 8-Track of Miss You is a longer version of the song mixed and edited by Chris Kimsey.

The DSKO mix released in 1978 (long version) was put together by Bob Clearmountian and features a drum loop and several parts that were duplicated. Bob Clearmountain repeated parts such as "Come Home, Come home."

Kimsy has the true version of the song but longer and without the sax solo but more guitar parts.

What Clearmountian was very confusing to figure out. I'll look for my notes as I did figure it out. What Bob did was absolute genius! Clearmountian sliced and edited, repeated, looped and most importantly and amazing juxtaposition.

The juxtaposition, in other words the placement of parts of the song are in the wrong order of the 8:35 mixes of the song. The end of the 'long version(s)' is actually the middle of the song.

To understand what the hell the Miss Yous are all about, you need to undestand Miss You #2 which is the original Miss You which all other released Miss Yous are created.

Here is Miss You #2. It's a great version all on it's own. I love it!

At 6:30 is the the third artwork for the some girls cover.

I threw this video together using images from Some Girls and Miss You that are the right images for the song. I hate when people use images (photos) that are from the wrong era.

Miss You #2 is the way the Stones wrote the song. The obviously had in mind to make a long dance version and an album cut IMHO.

Another example of a juxtaposition is the way the Gimme Shelter movie was edited together.

Beast of Burden 8-Track is a longer version of the song that we know and love from Some Girls.

The Rarities version of Miss You is not and edited down version of one of the long 8:35 verisions. It's an entirely different mix. Check out the harmonica solo around the 7 minute mark.

Arnie says: "Part of Bill's bass cable is still seen." Then Arnold Grove replied, "And a narrow strip of Bill's flared pant leg remains, too, just along the left edge of the mic stand (under Mick's twelfth fret)."

Arnold remarked, "bill wyman asked to be removed from that pic for the album cover. he has rights to his image being used by the stones. usually ok's it for archival concert releases but that was no an old concert being released."

Here's some of my notes from a previous post:

Quote
elmod
Miss You "8 Track version" = edited and remixed version IV, featuring extended rap, extended guitar part plus the sax solo (additional strophe)

The Miss You 8-Track is the Chris Kimsey extended mix. The DSKO Mix from the 1978 vinyl and the 2002 remix from Don't Stop (I referred to as a Rock Remix) was created from the master tapes by Bob Clear Mountain. The Rarities Miss You I could never find any information about who mixed it or anything.

I can tell you that all of these versions of Miss You are taken from Miss You #2. If you really want to understand Miss You than you need to know Miss You #2. Miss You #2 is great on it's own!

I've spent countless days trying to figure out Miss You. It all started in 1997 when my friend want to add the sax solo from the LP version of Miss You in to the extended version of Miss You (only one extended version back then).

Our splicing project didn't work for several reasons. One problem was the sound/mix from the LP was not close to the sound and mix of the 12 inch extended version.

Years later after the 2002 long mix of Miss You came out on the Don't Stop single I thought I'd try it again. Now we had a rock mix of the song where the guitars were brought up in the mix much more and these was the bass and drums over-dominating the mix. It didn't work again for several reasons.

One reason the splice job didn't work is because the sax solo over laps with a guitar solo. If you want to find a marker to see where these two version line up, listen to the rhythm guitar (going from memory here) at the end of the sax solo at about 04.16. This is a key marker.

One thing that drove me nuts about trying line-up the different Miss Yous was it seems obvious if I'm trying to line-up the longer 2002 mix and an LP mix would be to line them up when Mick screams, "Whaaa" just before the sax solo on the LP and the same "Whaaa" before a guitar solo in the same spot (different time of course sinse the LP version is edited and the official 8.35 extended version has an added drum loop make the song longer.

The backing music of the sax solo (LP edit) matches the extended version(s) from 4.14-4.28. The “WHAAAA!” on the Some Girls LP edit of Miss You backing music would come in at about 4.13 but the WHAAA!” on the extended Miss You comes in at 4.35.

The "Whaaa" line-up didn't work either because the "Whaaa" is an over dub and they are placed at two different points in the songs. The "whaaa" comes in later I think on the 8.35 versions. That piece of info boggled my brain for the longest time. Remember it's the marker at the very end of the sax solo which is most important to figuring it all out.

You have to base all research on Miss You #2.

People mean well when the share information about Miss You but they are usually wrong. Here in this thread we had good info saying that the 2002 DS (Don't Stop) and the 1978 DSKO (Disco) version were different mixes. Many people say that Rarities is a shortened DSKO mix or a shortened DS 2002 mix. That is not close to being true. The Rarities is an entirely different mix. Something new for the Rarities album. I guess they had this lying around and decided to use it? idk.

I'm a huge fan of Miss You and the Rarities is my favorite. I like the mix the best. I think Rarities is based on the rhythm guitar more where as the DSKO mix is led by keyboards and drums.

A huge difference between the Rarities release and the others is during the harmonica solo just before the 7 minute mark when the harmonica and lead solos are over.

The problem with the Rarities mix for my taste is that when the sax/harmonica solo (which is really cool) is over, the song does not transition well back to the rest of the song (7.11) as it does with the other renditions.

Another problem we had way back in 1996 trying to splice the two Miss Yous together was not only the mix but the LP version runs faster than the longer versions.

Another Marker to let you know which version of the longer Miss You comes from which master mix comes in at 1.34. The old versions of the longer Miss You have that lick at 1.34. Apparently, with the 2002 DS release is when it all changed according to my research. If you compare every longer version of Miss You at the 1.34 lick or "Missing Lick" as I call it that is the key marker to tell you if you have a pre-2002 master the song was taken from or a post-2002 master the song was taken from. Here's some proof:

MISS YOU 8.34 (12' Mix) Flashpoint CBS 4669182 1990 MISS YOU IV A has missing lick 1.34
Miss You 8.35 12' The Versions A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 (disco) Glimmers-MsYoo 12 vinyl rip A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 (Extended Version) SG REVISITED A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 funwithvinyl 12 IN PROMO A has missing lick 1.34
Miss You 8.35 (Special Disco Version) DK 4609 (vinyl) A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 12 SINGLES 71-06 A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 24 bit (disco) A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 CBS 656068 3 (3 inch ) A has missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 Singles 71-06 dont stop A missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 8.35 (Remix) DONT STOP A missing lick 1.34
MISS YOU 7.33 (Dance Mix) Rarities VIRGIN TOCP-66508 A missing lick 1.34

The 2002 DS Miss You which is very similar to the Singles 1971-1006 (2006 release) as well as the old 1978 extended release on vinyl have the same edits, except for the 'missing lick' (btw I like that lick!) besides a totally different mix from all of the other Miss Yous released, the 8.35 edit by Bob Clear mountain is totally different then Miss You #2 or any of the Chris Kimsey edits.

Bob Clear mountain is a genius! Bob Clear mountain not only added/created the drum loop which was cool, especially for the Disco version but rearranged the song, cut, splices, duplicates in a wild juxtaposition (out of order) and it works well! Amazing! Fake!

Yes, the 8.35 is clearly a Bob Clearmountain creation. He's another member of the band here except his instrument is the mixing board and editing.

In the 8.35 versions of the song that Bob edited together he rearranges the entire song after the first "Come Home, Come Home!" It's all out of order and done brilliantly. The last verse he uses should be after the sax solo-guitar solo as it is on the LP but it's a strong ending. It works well!

In the 8.35 edits the "Come Home, Come Home!" is there twice. Bob added it a second time. If you compare the 8.35 version to the original Miss You #2 you'll see it should only be there once. This alone tells us that the shorter releases of the Miss You from the LPs, singles, greatest hits and rarities is not a shorter version of the 8.35 edits. NO!

The 8-Track and Rarities match Miss You #2 exactly until they are done (without the overdubs etc...). The 8.35 you can see isn't even close once the first "Come Home, Come Home!" comes in.

Everything on the 8.35 versions came from the Stones themselves except for the drum loop. However the lead guitar parts before the "Come Home, Come Home" have the vocal over top of the lead. Bob Cleamountain stripped those guitar parts out of the first half of the song and duplicated them and put those parts in again as solos without the vocals. Many parts in the 8.35 edit are actually in twice.

Listening to Miss You #2, which stands tall on it's own, a great version of the song (Sister Morphine version) you can see that the Stones planned for the song to be a single and an extended version. It was certainly, obviously designed that way.

Another thing that was hard to figure out is which parts of the chorus was cut for which version. There are background markers and the way Jagger sings some lines that will give us a clue. I figured it out.

I think the best LP version of Miss You is on Some Girls TOCP-66456 (2005). There is much more guitars upfront.

The best 8.35 mix, idk, the Disco Mix is far different than the 2002 and 2006 releases. Listening to Miss You is like eating Chicken. How many ways are there to prepare chicken? Would you like fired, chicken parm or the disco mix? A little more lead on your croquet with a little more pepper in the mix? ha-ha

I'll leave you with my notes in the We Transfer file below.

Rarities has heavy bass

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Track 1. Special Disco Mix (8:34) - Although there are several extened versions of Miss You, there is only one Special Disco Mix. It was only released on 12" vinyl in 1978. With it's heavy drum/bass Disco dance beat mix, this Miss You is lead by the keyboards and bass. Stripped of much of the songs lead guitar and rhythm guitar and only features a few chords or licks during changes in the song but does feature full lead guitar solos spliced in later in the song. This and the other official extended versions of the song have sections duplicated and re-spiced back in a juxtaposition and also features a drum/bass loop.

Other official releases of extended versions of Miss You(8:35) never captured the mood of this late 1970's dance mix like the original vinyl. This fan made vinyl rip from "Dem Collector's Edition" captures the original vinyl the best!

Track 2. LP Edit (4:49) - This 2009 Universal release of Miss You (UM B0012837-02) is by far the best and brightest mix of the LP Edit of Miss You with the most separation between instruments. The guitars are mix way up compared to other releases and they did a great job of it! The heavily edited, over-dubbed, LP Edit features a Mel Collins saxophone solo which is special to the 8 -Track & LP Edits. This 2009 UM release has the Lead Guitar and Sax brought out better than ever.

Track 3. Rarities (7:33) - This stripped-down rhythm-guitar-based driving mix features a unique harp solo with more lead guitar. This harp-guitar duel is truer to the unreleased original version of Miss You #2.

Track 4. 8 -TRACK (5:44 Some Girls Revisited) - Taken from Miss You #4 (edited version of Miss You #2 with over dubs). The song is based on an extended LP Edit guitar mix and not one of the dance mixes. Only the 8 -Track is the only official release to feature an extended lead guitar solo that goes beyond the 1:20 mark and continues in to the first chorus of, "Ahhh, ahhhh, ahhhh-hh" (solo from 1:07 - 1:34). The 8 -Track features a longer edit than the LP Edit but does not feature the drum/bass loop or additional guitar solos. Like the LP edit, much of the lead guitar is present during the verses and not re-spliced in as lead guitar solos as done in the other extended versions.

Track 5. Miss You #2 - This is the original full-length source master of the officially released, edited versions of Miss You before various over-dubs and mixes. This more laid-back Miss You shows the original take of the song with a different unedited and natural order as created. Full lead guitar in the left channel.

More:

Miss You - Thanks for the compliments. Like I said, get to really know Miss You #2 which is the key to everything about the various Miss You releases. I wanted to put together a maxi single of Miss Yous and include my 'Frankenstein Mix' which would put everything from every Miss You in to one song. I'm no sound guy and I actually did the mix but there are obvious splices because I can't match the sound from the many releases (and un-releases).

What I figured-out was that the Stones probably did all that could be done with Miss You and putting it all together in a 'Frankenstein Mix' didn't work besides my unprofessional editing job.

I found that adding in the guitars over the verses of Miss You worked. They can be stripped from Miss You #2. They are well separated. The fact that Bob Cleamountian used the exact same solos by themselves later without the vocals in the 8.35 Miss You didn't matter to me.

When the guitars are added (stripped out of the Disco Mix but can be faintly heard in the background) the whole Disco thing is gone. Less is more in a Disco mix.

The difference in speed in the LP versions made a big difference. Adding the up-beat, almost bubbly sax solo in to the DS 2002/2006 (Don't Stop rock mix) makes the song not so hard edged. The awesome lead guitar work kicked ass! I love the sax solo but in makes the long versions less powerful.

I found the more guitar work in the mix, the less power the song had. There was good reason for Bob to strip it out of the long 8.35 Miss You. With the guitar stripped and a lot of the keyboards stripped or mixed way down the driving rhythm of the drums and bass made the song more powerful and more of a driving force. The keyboards in the Disco mix were sort of used as licks are used or drum rolls (whatever it's called when the drummer does a roll around the drum kit at the end of a verse or line in the song or introduces the chorus) which helps the transition in to a chorus or change in a song.

There a lot of parts that are more obvious in Miss You #2 that get burried in all of the other versions. Miss You #2 is a pleasure all in itself.

My friend suggest that I add all of the lead from Miss You #2 in to the DS (Don't Stop 2002 8.35) because there is a lot of great lead that wasn't used. I added it all in but found that it made the song less powerful. Then I only added some lead but that had the same less powerful result. Bob Clearmountain used all of the most powerful lead guitar work. The man is very gifted! Once you know Miss You #2 from beginning to end, it's easy to see how gifted Bob is and how great he made Miss You.

The LP version I mention that I liked (Some Girls TOCP-66456 (2005)) somebody did an awesome job on bringing in more guitar work (or mixing up more guitar work) so it can be heard I think better than any other version. They did an awesome job on this mix! There are other LP mixes that some other parts can be heard better but 'hands down' Some Girls TOCP-66456 (2005) is the best im my opinion and I've download and ripped every LP version of Miss You know to man!

I've also collected every 8-Track Miss You (Miss You IV taken from Miss You #2) and every Disco 1978 vinyl rip I could find. There's info in the We Transfer History link which directs you to the very best sources.

I don't think any version of Miss You official released on CD is the 1978 vinyl mix exactly. Somebody always tinkered with the sound, bass or whatever. None are exactly true to the vinyl. Only the vinyl rip is the real Disco Mix from 1978 (see history in previous post - get it while you can). I do think that Flashpoint CBS 4669182 1990 was closest. Maybe CD technology wasn't great enough by 1990 (compare the first Steel Wheels to all of the later version to see what I mean about the sound technology of 1989-1990 - CD sound wasn't there yet).

I was just 'spinning my wheels' as they say and going nowhere by mixing all of the Miss Yous. The Stones did all of the work. Chris Kimsey's 8-Track is brilliant for a longer LP version. 8-Tracks which I use to hate, (especially when it would change tracks in the middle of Midnight Rambler on YaYas) have come to be really cool with rarities from many bands (listen to Pink Floyd's Pigs on the Wing 8-T - a great one) but luckily for us there were 8-Track Tapes in 1978 or we may have never have gotten the 8-Track Miss You!

Chris Kimsey mad a great Miss You on the 8-Track which is a rare track only released on cheap 8-Track tape. The mast of Miss You IV (8-T) must be around somewhere (not complaining about the rarities version). Chris made not only a long Miss You but he made the LP a little more hard with more lead guitar. It's the ultimate LP version!

So adding lead over the Disco version from the well separated Miss You #2 works in spots but does take away where there too much as far as the drive goes.

After mixing and splicing and listening to Miss You over and over and over for hours at a time on long trips in the car, etc... I never grew tired of the song but only got more respect for it's greatness and all of it's incarnations.

Maybe next month when I have time or maybe in a few years I'll go back to the mixing board and redo Miss You again. It gets easier every time because I know the song very well - every nuance of every version!

You are fortunate to have my notes! It may be fun for you to listen to the background voices n Miss You and see they come exactly from Miss You #2. Chris and Bob could filter out those voices since the Stones recorded Miss You Live in the studio and different parts bled over in to another musician's track. I thought it sounded cool at the time as if it was some new effect. Then when I realized they could remove it all I thought how could they release this song with these imperfections but I'm very glad they did! It was easier to match the different Miss Yous with the Miss You #2 vocals in the background of the the released versions ("There must be a hole in the sound" - ha-ha!).

I thnk a cool project to do would be to make an edited version of Miss You #2. Then splice in parts of the Rarities Miss You such as the guitar-harp solo before the 7 minute mark, some chorus stuff and a few other parts. Or a similar idea which may work better would be to make the extended Miss You IV (8-T) by adding in a lot of lead from Miss You #2 and the Rarities solos before the 7 minute mark and use all the versus. The problem is the ending is anti-climatic. Bob Clearmountain had the right idea with ripping a verse out of the middle of the song and using it for a strong ending. This would be my 3rd Miss You splice job (dozens of tries) but it would work because the 8-T, Miss You #2, Rarites and the 8-T are the same with different overdubs and Mixes. All of the 8.35 version are a whole 'different animal.'

I had the though of putting together this Miss You and then asking if any sound people out there would redo it if they liked it. It would be fairly easy to do but a lot of work.

Get the best 8-Track Miss You IV. I have the two best I could find in my HISTORY here. Match the end of the 8-T to Miss You #2. Splice in the end of Miss You #2 (the sound would match pretty closely). Then edit the end of Miss You #2 and use only the strongest unreleased guitar solos (I hate to waste guitar solos but we have Miss You #2 and some of them work great on Miss You #2 but would weaken this "Extended Miss You #4." Add lead guitar from the beginning of Miss You #2 over the verses/vocals like the LP version has more. The ending is the problem. Do a fade out?

For artwork, I bought the sheet music of Miss You which is the same photo from the single but it doesn't have the printing over the picture and has a good font to use.

If anyone wants to do the project - GO FOR IT! I'd be glad to help any way I can.

Thanks, haven't checked that.

I recorded with the Rarities version as a backing track for the IORR Band and had to play along with a track a semi note up. Quite disturbing smiling smiley

Thanks Ricky

As for the 32 variations mentioned by mikerocha in earlier thread I am sure, as he points out himself, is very theoretic.
I have only seen very few ecamples with blue title. Likewise have I never seen all 4 colourvariations of the pale covers.
That is of course not proof they don't exist, but I doubt it, though it would be great and logical

I think the same: I saw many variations but not 32... only a theory.

Again: many thanks for your site. A lot of work for sure.

Someone should make a Miss You CD with all studio versions officially released + the 11 minutes "mother version"
Would be awesome and make comparison really easier

What about the famous "under construction" cover! The insert just had Lucille Ball and a few others blacked out.

this was my favorite one...I bought it when it was the cover and being 11 at t he time had no idea it was replacing a controversial version. I just thought it was clever and funny.

I actually started the project you mentioned. I even put several versions of Miss You together to have the sax solo and all of the guitar work in one version. It didn't work very well. The differences in sound were noticeable and for some reson the sax solo didn't fit together with the guitar work. The versions released were all great. They had it figured-out.

I've collected every Miss You photo ad and anything Miss You including scanning books. I did profiles of everyone who played on the song.

It all lost steam (energy) when I couldn't get all of the versions to fit together in to one song.

I later thought of mixing the Rarities version with Miss You #2. That would probably work well. I was sick of working on Miss You after two years of it.

Now, I'm working on the 81-82 project.

Some many Stones projects, so little time.

I'll post the project that didn't work soon (the versions mixed together I call "Miss You Frankenstein Version").

thank you exilestones for not making me dig through my attic-i have about 3 or 4 versions of the vinyl some girls.each time they put out a different one i bought it.

if i remember correctly[which would be a miracle]the original is the vivid colors with the celebrity faces intact, then the faded color with the faces intact and after the legal problems the vivid color again with some of the faces missing.

i also have a red vinyl miss you maxi single with a purple cover similar in shade to the beast of burden someone posted except it's the band on the cover with[again trying to remember] keith in leather and mick with his hand over his face.
