.

(b) Others

Blinded by the Light (Bruce Springsteen) topped by Manfred Mann's Earth Band
.
.
.

Like A Rolling Stone (Boby Dylan) topped by the Rolling Stones or by Jimi Hendrix or not?

Off the top of my head (based on original post):
A) The Stones Love In Vain over Robert Johnsons original.
A') I'd pick Buddy's version of Not Fade Away over the Stones studio cut. I did love it when they opened with it live though and would probably put that version above Buddy's.
cool smiley Southside Johnny's version of The Fever tops Bruce's in my mind.
C) I'd pick Bob's version of Like a Rolling Stone over the other two. HOWEVER, I'd pick Jimi's version of All Along the Watchtower over Bob's.

Additional:
I prefer Keith & the Winos version(s) of Something Else better than Eddie Cochran's. (Damn I feel dirty after typing that).
A couple of Live J Geils Band covers, Homework & First I Look At The Purse may not actually "outperform" the original, but I do like them better. Also, Peter Wolf rerecorded Homework solo and that may be my favorite of the bunch.
Would it be blasphemous to prefer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of Over the Rainbow to Judy Garland's?

I'm sure I'll think of more but that's enough for now!

Peace,
Mr DJA

Well, the other night I had a real lot of examples on my mind, but these days I have the flu and nothing comes to my mind easy.

I relistened to Jimi's Like A Rolling Stone and was amazed by the lightness and ease he treats the guitar with and the the lyrics leave his mouth.

4 good choices. Twist and Shout came to mind immediately.

On an ironic note, I heard a young singer recently introduce "Knocking On Heaven's Door" as a Gun'N'Roses song! confused smiley

That's just so wrong even though it may be somewhat understandable generationally. It did make me think of this cover that I just heard recently (check out the four-handed bass solo at ~2:25):

Of course yes.

- Guns N' Roses - Mama Kin.
- Hendrix - All along the watchtower
- Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
- Bonnie Raitt - Under the falling sky & That Song About The Midway
- Jackson Browne - I've been the one

GN'R version of SFTD is fantastic too but didnt outperform the original of course. I mean, Axl Rose is a bad boy but Jagger is the devil.

Ps: Mick Taylor - Blind Willie McTell (from 'A Stone's Throw')

Always dug the early versions, over Dylan.

It's hard to say that the Stones' version of Like A Rolling Stone is better than Dylan's, but I really really like the version of the song on Stripped.

Changed the Locks - Tom Petty
Passionate Kisses - Mary Chapin Carpenter

Two very successful Lucinda Williams covers, but now that I think about it, Lu does 'em better... cool smiley

"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin is way better than the original version by Spirit.

I'll agree with the 1st (can't believe I didn't think of it myself!)
2nd would be a toss up
I might agree with the 3rd if you would have cited Otis instead of Aretha

Along the lines of your 1st suggestion... I'd give Cocker the edge over Traffic on Feelin' Alright

Peace,
Mr DJA

Yes, that's what I was just about to write. Both nice versions, though.

None of those are even close to the originals, imo.

i'm sure this has been said, but "satisfaction" by otis redding...

bob dylan's version of "Like a rolling stone" is the best version there is - that's my vote. the stones' version doesn't hold a candle to it.

"roll over beethoven" and "rock-n-roll music" by the beatles are arguably as good or better than the CB versions.
