Made In The Shade cover question
Posted by: skl127 ()

Anybody know who the model is on the front cover of Made In The Shade?

There is a previous post on the subject, but it is not conclusive

Angie Bowie seems to get mentioned . . . was the cover airbrushed, could it be a man even?

Cheers

As StonesTod indicated the original cover art by Christian Piper is of Angela Bowie sunbathing in the nude. I always thought the pyramids in the background were a nice touch to make you think twice at what first appears to be a beach scene.

Thanks for clearing that up

Never noticed the pyramid touch before either

No man hands, no Adam's apple -- though androgynous they're no he/she.....

Wearing a wedding ring too!

I always thought it could have been Brigitte Nielsen but in 1975 she was probably too young...

Regarding the made in the shade cover, I always thought it was supposed to be some kind of half man, half woman, with the left arm and hand looking very feminine, while the right arm and hand look kinda masculine.

Just found this info on the web

Like so many of the covers released by the Rolling Stones, 1976's Made In The Shade was designed to provoke thought and define a point of view.

The Stones opinion of their own stature was made clear by the defiantly disinterested woman facing away from the viewer, her eyes and ears covered by over-sized reflective sunglasses and world-isolating headphones. “We love you, but we don’t need you,” it seems they are saying. “In fact, we may not even love you. We’ll keep you guessing.”

The androgyny of the subject extends the “keep ‘em guessing” message. She has the shape of a woman but the muscles and haircut of a man and is sporting a ring on her left hand 2nd finger in. Lastly, the cover highlights the Stones constant experimentation. The androgynous crossing of the lines made famous by Jagger and his pals Bowie and Reed is a subtle undertone to the overall design

Made In The Shade was a fitting title for this, the Stones very first compilation album. Indeed they had “made it” and the Epyptian-style script says it was more than local interest. They were worldwide.

Brad Benedict and Linda Barton’s wonderful book, Phonographics, credits Christian Piper as the artist but the internet reveals nothing about who he was (or who the was model for the painting).

Could have been Angie Bowie? Fitting it would have been as Made In The Shade included the song “Angie,” still one of the Stones most reliable hits.

mrfancyman - how do you post a picture - a quick info guide would be appreciated?

Cheers

With the marked icon you can add an URL that is a link to an image.
So what I did is a search on Google images and added the URL to this message.
If you want to publish a own picture/image you must put it first on the internet.
The image I now show you is on an internet foto album of mine.

Here some more examples:

I always found the title interesting compared to a person sitting in a chair out in a desert with NO SHADE AT ALL.

Made In The Shade was a fitting title for this, the Stones very first compilation album.

This isn't too accurate either, unless they mean very first compilation album released on Rolling Stones Records.

There was another one somewhere that said MITS came out in 1974!

That album would have been made essential if they had included "Through The Lonely Nights" and "Let It Rock". And why did they omit "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" in favor of some non-A-sides? (nevermind, I know why)

Christgau's review:

Six tracks from two of the greatest albums of the decade and four from two of the more dubious ones. Not the four best, either. C+

Roy Carr, in his "Illustrated Record", suggested that they could have livened things up by substituting the version of Brown Sugar with Clapton playing slide. Would have been a cool move, but unfortunately, it's exactly the kind of cool move they never ever make.

It's still a pretty killer comp. I've made my own version with some changes. I've always liked it anyway.

The woman in the picture was not a professional model, she was a regular everyday housewife named Joyce. Her husband and kids would spend weekends at family oriented nudists resorts. She did pose a lot for nudist magazines in the parks, and the original photo used for the cover landed in several nudists magazines. I don't know the details of how she was contacted for permission, but I remember hearing about it happening from her daughter Melanie. (I knew both of her daughters Melanie and Molissa). So at the time the picture was taken, nobody knew of its eventual fate.
