Bob Wills Is Still The King
(Waylon Jennings)

Zilker Park, Austin, Texas, US, October 22, 2006

Mick Jagger - vocals, acoustic guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - pedal steel guitar
Darryl Jones - bass
Chuck Leavell - keyboards

Well, the honky-tonks in Texas are my natural second home
Where you tip your hat to the ladies and the rose of San Antone
I grew up on music that we called Western Swing
It don't matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is still the king

Well, I can still remember the way things were back then
In spite of all the hard times, I'd do it all again
To hear the Texas Playboys and Tommy Duncan sing
Makes me proud to be in Texas, Bob Wills is still the king

You can hear the Grand Ol' Opry from Nashville, Tennessee
It's the home of country music, on that we all agree
When you cross that ol' Red River, boy, well, that don't mean a thing
Cause when you're down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the king

Well, if you ain't never been there, I guess you ain't been told
You’ve gotta live in Texas, you’ve got to have a lot of soul
It's the home of Willie Nelson, it’s the home of Western Swing
Cause when you're down in Austin, Bob Wills is still the king
And when you're down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the king

Produced by The Rolling Stones

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “The Biggest Bang” DVD
(Redline Entertainment Release 75002) US, June 12, 2007

Not knowing who Bob Wills is is like not knowing who Elvis Presley is!

Boring song. At least for anyone not from Texas. They've recorded plenty of decent country songs themselves, perform on of those! If you choose to play a cover song, play a tasty one. This is a pastiche.

I just happened to have watched this DVD last night. Absolutely love this song. I think the combo of "Bob Wills is Still the King" and "Learning the Game" at this show is just amazing. But then, that's probably why the show was included in the Bigger Bang DVD set.

Mr. Ed - I have to disagree I like the rendition of this from the Austin show.

Just a thought-dont ya think the song selection might have had something to do with the fact they were performing IN Austin,Tex. I'm sure it had something to do with Keith selecting a Buddy Holly song(a Lubbock, TEX native!)

Native Texans are a proud lot and 'Bob Wills Is Still The King' is like their national anthem. It was a masterstroke, the Stones performing in the capitol of Austin. Too bad Ronnie's steel solo sort of fizzles out.

The Stones also do an abbreviated version of "El Paso"(the Marty Robbins song) in El Paso 2006!

Bingo. Also, during the band introductions..."on the saxophone, from Lubbock, TX, Bobby Keyes".

I was there! It was such a great and unique show. The crowd certainly loved this tune.

It was the first time I had ever heard the song. (not a big country fan) But by the last chorus I was singin' along.

I'm sure the crowd loved it, but since I'm not from Texas, it does nothing for me. I felt the same way when I saw them playing As Tears Go By in Milan.

I guess the Stones thought it would go over well on an international level since they chose to include filming the show for official release IMO.

it's almost as good as Far Away Eyes... and that means it's @#$%& brilliant! if I was at the show, it'd be beyond words really. shame they don't do more country *covers*.

can anyone guide me to some good country in that, well-shaped rock'n'roll sound? thanks in advance.

The DVD doesn't really capture the reaction that song got but it was big. There are lots of songs they could have doen in Austin but it appears that they made a good choice.

They did a good version of it as well.

Letting it bleed: I wish I´d been there! Beeing from Sweden, it would have been a lifetime experience indeed!

I watched this DVD a couple of weeks ago. I actually liked Bob Willis more than I did LTG. Which everybody else loves. I just thought that Bob Willis worked better and was performed better. I think that Learning the Game just sounded like every other slow Keith song.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

To Amused, you asked about " guide me to some good country in that, well-shaped rock'n'roll sound?"

You should check out Cross Canadian Ragweed - www.crosscanadianragweed.com or their MySpace site.

They even mention Bob Wills in one of the songs on the Live and Loud from Cain's Ballroom CD.
This band leans more towards the rock and roll sound and are bad a*s!!

thanks, I'll try to get their "Mission California" album. I don't fancy alt-country after a crush on Wilco, which after some time I find boring and not-quite-right, I'm gonna give that music 2nd try :-)

The song is okay, but it is not great. They have so many better ones.
