Discarded Stones fan mail - 1981

Did you ever send anyone a 'fan letter'?

Yes, the Stones, and if my letter(s) had been included here I'd have been so pissed. angry smiley But thankfully by 1981 my letter-writing days were over.

You can certainly understand why the band need good security at all times.

The dumpster seems like the best place for those letters.

Were the Stones' core fan-base not a little old to be sending the group letters in 1981? I can understand young teenage girls scribbling to Mick and Keith in the 1960's and early 70's, perhaps, but surely they were not attracting too many 12 year-old screamers by the 80's.

Effortless for these apparent rock gods to amass an army of drones in the US Midwest...

By the way, I think I dated Joy in high school...

No of course not. Anyway just to translate, I was 13 in 1981 and fancied MJ, who is older than my mum. Apologies for the lack of punctuation in my previous post but I am on the bus and it is not easy writing on a tiny keyboard. He was hot in those tight trousershot smiley

Oh dear.
Some truly disturbing letters.
Quite sad, actually.

Hey, some days all attempts at a joke just fail, don't they?

Still, tomorrow is another day...

it's cause for concern certainly, but simply means one has to tighten up ones game.

not to worry, we're all in this for the long haul.

Sometimes you've got to make like Johnny Carson when one of his jokes bombed (as plenty of them did): shrug, smile and move on to the next one.

Sorry if this was already discussed, but I stumbled across this Tumblr page filled with fan mail directed towards the Stones right up until 1981/2. Here's the opening page's statement:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1988 I was given a box of Rolling Stones fan mail by an acquaintance who had retrieved it from the trash in 1981, when he worked in the music business. It held about six weeks of letters, mostly from March and April 1981. I don’t know if any earned a response.

The letters were riveting—funny requests, mundane details of day to day lives, cryptic expressions of creativity, concern about the recent attacks on John Lennon and Ronald Reagan, sad and disturbed fans’ seemingly sincere hopes for an “emotional rescue,” and more. I’ve held onto them as a fascinating document of fandom and people and an era.

Here they are in chronological order, mostly without comment. I’ve tried to protect people’s identities, but if by some amazing chance you discover your own letter here, I’m happy to take it down.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty neat (and odd) letters...Stones Fan mail Tumblr.
