I'm currently living in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), half on sabbatical, half launching my own company.
Coming to the point, every trade here is organised in streets, e.g. there is street for tailors, shoemakers, etc. There also a guitar street with a couple of shops specialised in making custom guitars priced around $500-$600, I guess depending on materials and overall quality.
I have some experience with manufacturing in Asia, generally what you pay for is what you get, but there are some very good quality for money deals as well, as labour is just very cheap.
So, I'd like to have a guitar made for myself, but I'd need your help - especially Mathijs etc. who have a lot of knowledge about what to watch out for, which kind of materials (which kind of wood) to choose, which pick-up brands, etc.
If you guys are interested, I can document the whole process here incl. photos and everything you might be interested in. Thanks in advance!
I know a lot about guitars, but that doesn't really help, because if you want advice here you need to tell us what kind of guitar you're aiming for. What music do you wanna play on it, what kind of sounds, what should it look like? Is it going to be a classic model like a Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul or something more unique? And so on.
