super-basic question: Reg Thorpe...?
Posted by: swiss ()

hi everyone,

I'm a bit embarrassed to post this basic question, but I've been curious about it forever.

Note: I did search the archives (using Advanced Google) and didn't see an answer--tho someone asked this same question in March 2009.

Who was Reg Thorpe? I think I've heard he was an invented character, but is there any more "story" to it?

Well thank you very much and now I think it's time for us all to go. So from all of us to all of you, not forgetting the boys in the band and our producer Reg Thorpe, we'd like to say God bless. So if you're out tonight, don't forget, if you're on your bike, wear white. Evening all (from "Something Happened to Me Yesterday," BTB)

thanks!
swiss

I always thought that it was a typical old fashioned sounding made up name for a BBC type pops orchestra band leader, the whole thing being a pastiche of that 50s style light entertainment we used to get in the UK before Radio 1 started in 67.

What I know about the producer Reg Thorpe is that he had an aborted go with the Spinal Tap during one of their early mid-seventies comeback attempts.

I remember a quote by Mick or Keith about Andrew Oldham saying He was good in inventing names like Sandy Beach and Reg Thorpe.

Reg Thorpe is Andrew Loog Oldham. It's just a joke.

I know it was an invented/joke name -- was just looking for any backstory like it was actually ALO -- and this awesome bit from JJHMick!

Sandy Beach is the name given for Cover Design of the UK/European Aftermath.
