Mick Taylor on underrated guitarists list
Posted by: Buddy Young ()
Date: October 2, 2007 21:40

From RollingStone.com:

Statistics show that the average rock fan spends roughly 4.7 hours per year arguing over who’s the greatest guitarist of all time (see: Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time). We asked you who’s most criminally left out of those discussions — in other words, who are the most underrated guitarists ever? Here are the results:

1. Prince
2. Kurt Cobain
3. Neil Young
4. George Harrison
5. Ace Frehley
6. Mike McCready
7. Lindsey Buckingham
8. Mick Taylor
9. Nels Cline
10. Johnny Greenwood
11. Tom Verlaine
12. Carrie Brownstein
13. Mick Jones
14. Robert Fripp
15. Johnny Marr
16. John Frusciante
17. Izzy Stradlin
18. Daniel Johns
19. Vernon Reid
20. Robbie Robertson
21. Mick Ronson
22. Billy Corgan
23. Elliott Smith
24. Eddie Hazel
25. Phil Keaggy

As with all such lists the results are entirely subjective. I agree with some choices; Taylor and Marr chief amongst them, but Corbain and Corgan? I don't get it.

1. Prince
5. Ace Frehley
7. Lindsey Buckingham
8. Mick Taylor
15. Johnny Marr

Five of my favorites. I've always thought that #15 has been very influenced by #7.

Let me tell you this, it got nothing to do how good you are ........ technically there are a lot of guitar players that are better........ but it's that feeling that's got you..............or not....... so in my opinion no dicussion on this topic

Nice to see RObert Fripp there, as well as Taylor.
Anyway, a list about "underrated guitarists" is pretty pointless. Besides the fact that "greatest guitarist" is a subjective thing; how can one rate who are underrated ? Jimi Hendrix is probably underrated - compared how good he really were. It's an endless discussion

If someone has a little knowledge of guitar playing or at least some taste he would never underrate guitarists like Mick Taylor, John Frusciante or George Harrison, just to name a few from this list. That means that this list is made by people who have no idea what they are talking about or (and) have no musical taste at all. This list is just useless crap. Kurt Cobain underrated as guitarist... OMG

#'s 20 & 24 should be the top two on this list. No contest.

Catch 22: you mention thenm, they come off the list. Once they're rated, they're not under-rated. Hence there's no top any of underrated guitarists if as soon as you think of one they fall out of the category ...

One of my top 5 was left out. Mick Green of The Pirates. If my failing memory serves me correctly, there was an blurb about him in Trouser Press. It said that he was a favorite of Jimmy Page, Richie Blackmore and Pete Townshend, and influenced them all to pick up the guitar. It also stated that Pete nicked his now famous 'windmill' style from Mick after seeing him play in the late 50s/early 60s. Somewhere in storage I've got the mag. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I agree, especially about Eddie Hazel. And I would like to add James Williamson to that list.

Angus should be number one on that list in my opinion.

I never understood how any of the guitarists from the list can be called underrated. For example, Johnny Marr has become a millionair wit his work with The Smiths, a band that many people call the best of the 80's. To this day, Marr is hugely infuential.

And how can Taylor be underrated? He's been a top player for 20 years, playing with the biggest names and bands of his time. Yes, his carreer took a dive due to drug addictions, but how many famous guitarists from the 60's and '70's are still famous and touring today?

Taylor is underrated, Cobain too but more as a songwriter and "melody maker"

Cobain????? I never really have gotten that.

Peter Green? Probably not on an underrated list because he is not underrated. I would think anyone would list him pretty high in their all time list.

Not much of a list anyway. I mean everyone knows those names how can they be underrated?

How about Jimmy Herring or Joe Bonamassa?

How about Ronnie Earl?

This list only makes sense if I know those not underrated...
At least Peter Green belongs to either list, too.

Agree about Ace and Izzy. Ace can do so much more than KISS allowed for. Ace and Peter Criss were the true talent in KISS.

The live side of the Out of Our Skulls album from 1977 by the re-formed Pirates is all the proof anyone needs that Mick Green should be on that list.

I'd add:

Al Anderson and Steve Ferguson from NRBQ

Zal Yanovsky from the Lovin' Spoonful

On the list you mean? He would not make any list of underated guitarists. Quite the contrary! The same would go for Peter Green. I suppose alot of what is and is not an under rated guitarist depends on the criteria you use. Alot of these so called "best" lists never mention what criteria was used in making the selection and are more popularity contests than anything. Curt Cobain a great guitarist? Songwriter maybe but guitarist? His selction only underscores my point I think.

These lists are always such a joke.

Then there's the fact that anyone who actually knows much about guitars and guitar players would never think of Mick Taylor as "underrated."

Rolling Stones is rather pathetic these days.

So who is actually on the "rated" list?
