I think Scottkeef is right. I've always been under the impression that walking the dog was a dance.

the dog was a dance. Other dog songs: The Dog and Can Your Monkey Do The Dog, both by Rufus Thomas and Philly Dog by The Markeys.

I had heard about all the meanings from Urban Dictionary but not the Yo Yo 's one.

So when Mick sings "I'm just a walking the dog/If you don't know how to do it/I'll show you how to walk the dog " he doesn't mean to walk a real dog ?confused smiley

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

It's a derogatory phrase, to state that you are walking with a female companion.

Rufus Thomas' song was about a dance. Aerosmith also does a nice version on their first album.

"Giving The Dog A Bone" by AC/DC is about something else.

There is an old kids rhyme that has many of the same words.
"Miss Mary Mack"

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack,
All dressed in black, black, black,
With silver button, button, buttons,
All down her back, back, back.

She asked her mother, mother, mother,
For fifty cent, cent, cents,
To see the elephant, elephant, elephants,
Jump the fence, fence, fence.

They jumped so high, high, high,
They touched the sky, sky, sky,
And didn't come back, back, back
Till the fourth of July, July, July.

The rhyme was around before the song was.
I think it was just an attempt at starting another lucrative dance craze.

Like the Crawl...

When it is spelled "Walking The Dawg" -- this phrase has recently been re-popularized due to the success of the hit TV show "American Idol". On that program, judge Randy Jackson uses the word "Dawg" as a term of something-or-other. The "Walking" portion of the phrase "Walking The Dawg" is a reference to him dissin' somebody and making that dawg take a walk.
