Underground releases

Some well known underground European labels like The Swinging Pig (TSP), Kiss The Stone (KTS) and Midnight Beat (MB) have been rumoured to being closed down, may be temporarily, or for ever. I guess they are tired of playing hide and seek with the major labels... Still the Japanese Stones specialist label VGP keep coming up with great (but oh so rare and expensive) releases.

Thanks to Jaime Castaneda, Australia and Hendrik Mulder, Netherlands, for supplying reviews and track listings! If you know any great and rare releases not reviewed here lately, then please send a review! For the record: IORR don’t know how or where you may find these rare releases. You can’t always get what you want, but if you try, you get what you need...

Vinyl Gang is a Japanese Bootleg CD label that have produced over 100 Rolling Stones bootlegs !! ranging from the Rare to the Fantastic, from the early years to the Voodoo Lounge Tour. The prices of these releases are expensive but you will find that the VGP release is normally superior to other similar releases.

VGP 101: A Rolling Stone Gather No Moss. One of best Stones Recordings from the 1960s appears on this 2CD set. CD1 contains the French radio broadcast show "musicorama" which are some live tracks from Paris Olympia 1965 - 1967 all in outstanding quality. the rest of the CD is filled with some poor sound quality songs from Swedish TV 1965.

CD2 is a complete soundboard recording from Paris, Olympia 1965 the quality is not as good as what is on CD1 but still its very good. The second part of CD2 is a complete soundboard recording from Paris Olympia 1967. You can also find very similar excellent quality tracks on a recent European bootleg release called Du Fond Du Coeur (This CD is actually a copy of a previous VGP (#73) release called Brian Jones Still Gonna Miss You.) and is similar to disc 1 of Gather NO Moss but has some tracks from Shindig 1965 instead of Swedish TV 1965

VGP 110: Welcome to Australia. This CD is an excellent soundboard recording from Sydney 1973. A new complete tape surfaced recently and as a result this CD contains the last few songs at the end that were always missing. Rip this Joint, Jumping Jack Flash (and Street Fighting Man). I think the sound on this CD is better than other Sydney 1973 releases previously available.

VGP 111: Jack Daniels On Tour A Very Good Audience Recording from Washington 1972. This CD has slightly better sounds than the previously released CDs of this show. There is good sound on the acoustic tracks too. All Down The Line has a splice at around 2:41 from a different source till the end of the song.

VGP 114: Hope You Guess My Name Another Excellent Audience DAT recording from 1995. This CD is from Tokyo March 16th 1995. Not an essential CD if you have the soundboard recording from 12th March 1995 which appeared on many bootleg releases.

VGP 115: For Invitation Only Mick Jagger performed a concert at Webster Hall in 1993 for his new album Wandering Spirit. and until recently there was only an audience recording on a rare Japanese CD available to collectors. VGP have released a 2CD set which has the soundboard recording of this show on disc 1 and a second disc containing some extra goodies from Jaggers solo career. Also they used some excellent artwork from Krueger, making a beautiful front cover!
