Have enjoyed several of those mentioned -- I will single out "End of the Century" (Ramones) and Wim Wenders' contribution to the Scorsese blues series "The Soul of a Man" as two that transcend the already interesting subject matter as dare I say it works of art in their own right. The Ramones doc is fascinating even if you don't care for the Ramones -- which I do. "The

On the one hand he represents what I loathe about the 70s NYC Rock scene -- too much too cool for school and too much heroin. On the other hand he was part of some great tracks. As in music.

QuoteMILKYWAY Look at that face. So zoned out. He must have been on a dozen different chemicals. And no one thought to intervene. Stones camp intervening in 1973 -- funny!

I thought he'd already passed -- I know he had serious problems or a while. Along with paving the way for rock writing and other mags such as Rolling Stone, he was a primary creator of the "Smile" myth for Brian Wilson, and his thoughtful musings (in some instances with David Anderle)on Pet Sounds, Smile, Wild Honey, and other lesser known gems in the BW/BB catalog are what led me in

I had a copy of her "Rock Encyclopedia" until just recently (Hurricane Sandy took it and all my books away). I first got it when I was like 13 and it was totally cutting edge. In retrospect it was interesting how seriously "Rock" took itself in 1968/1969. Also interesting that you could look up important bands like Beacon Street Union or Dino, Desi, and Billy.

QuoteMunichhilton I was able to encompass his career on a 14 song best of...its all you need... Easy Plateau amongst his best. But I've heard he's a bit of a baby on stage and elsewhere... "Easy Plateau" is off "Cold Roses" with the Cardinals -- that would be my favorite LP of the last 10 years. A double and damn good.

I too love everything up through "Squeezing Out Sparks", but personally my favorite Geep phase was the albums he did on RCA in the late 80s/early 90s -- "Mona Lisa's Sister", "Human Soul" and (especially) "Struck by Lightning". It was a great period for rock by adults (think John Hiatt) and as far as I'm concerned these albums were at the apex. Of course

Saw this article in last week's Village Voice: A few interesting tidbits -- it was Billy Preston who brought him up as a possible Mick Taylor replacement and he was offered gigs with Spirit and Blood Sweat and Tears! Most interesting to me is his appraisal of his recluse/burn out legend -- no one offered him a contract! Anyway, back in the day we listened to a lot of Shuggie. "Ins

If you believe in something and walk the walk, I can respect you even if I disagree with you. What disturbs me about a lot of the conservative bloc is how many of them bang the war drums yet avoided service. And then profit from it.

With all due respect to it's wonderful use in "Surender", the modulation is often a truly cheap trick. Here's a cool example of some creative use: Have Mercy... And then on the other hand you have expert use of multiple keys... Gotta keep those...

Interesting topic. Favorites seen on the streets of New York: Buck Dharma, Mike Campbell (actually pushing his kid in a swing at a Central Park playground), and all of NRBQ! And I sat behind the Smithereens at the New York premiere of the Brian Wilson biopic "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" (directed by Don Was). I was in a production of "Mister Roberts" starring Mart

Now the thread says best "lead" singers. Having perused this thread, I'll add a twist and say the bands with three or more great lead singers are: The Band (Helm, Danko, Manuel) The Beach Boys (Brian and Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love) Three Dog Night (Negron, Wells, Hutton) I'd put the Beatles, Byrds, Eagles, CSNY, et al as only having two or even one great lead singer. I went to high school with Tinsley -- a prep boarding school. We had no idea he'd become a blues man! Great guy and great player, Haven't seen him in several years but saw him with the Heartfixers and then solo, always tremendous. Was supposed to open for Stevie Ray Vaughn on the tour booked when he died.
